October Plans

30 September, 2009

Tomorrow begins October, the eighth month of the Roman Calendar.  The Romans had no special association for October beyond Autumn, but we have Halloween, so I think for this month on the Sea of Stars Design Journal we shall do Monsters as our theme.

If there are any kinds of monsters you would like to see, let me know (here or in the forums) and I will see what I can do.  But I can promise some new undead and a template or two.  Expect something dangerous to appear this Friday . . .

New Spell – Missile Attack Spell

28 September, 2009

I have a confession to make, I dislike the iconic D&D spell magic missile.  No, dislike is too mild, I hate that spell, the autohit, the ‘force damage ignores all defenses’, the fact that it is the default (and bland) choice for arcane casters.   For my campaign, I have gone so far as to ban it entirely.

But I do have a replacement:

Putting the Wonder back into Wondrous Items

27 September, 2009

I have been seeing a lot of articles on this theme -such as Bringing Back the Magic and the brilliantly named “Is this a +3 Dagger I see before me?“- and I wrote about a related subject in Fantastic Fantasy.

The question is:

How do you make magic items special to the characters and to your players?

The United Network Command for Law and Enforcement

22 September, 2009

It has been pointed out to me that tonight is the 45th anniversary of the premier of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. series (on NBC).  The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a spy series, an action series and a hope for a better world.  A series known to me only through reruns and novels.  But it was ground breaking in its time.

There is a lovely tribute to the show at St. Crispin Day Society’s LJ page which is well worth reading.

Tuesday Magic Item – Sleep Pellet

22 September, 2009

From his sleeve, he plucked a small glass capsule and tossed it into the fire.  With a hollow pop, a wave of white smoke flowed out over the room.   The guards collapsed as they reached for their weapons.  When they awoke mere minutes later, he was gone.

A simple item for today:

New Spell – Ward Iron

21 September, 2009

The fey know of their vulnerability to cold iron, luckily their magic can overcome that . . . to some extent.

The faerie knight saw us draw our swords, he made a gesture of warding and then saluted us with his bronze weapon.  As we fought, our weapons did not bite as often as they should have as if some force was turning them away.

New Spell – Simple Request

18 September, 2009

Something for those silver tongued bards (and enchanters).

He asked of me but one thing.  It suddenly seemed like the most reasonable idea in the world.  So I did it . . .

Simple Request
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Language-Dependent, Mind-Affecting]
