June Review and Plans for July

30 June, 2010

We are now fully into Summer (at least in the Northern hemisphere) as June gives way to July.   July was named after Julius Caesar -and replacing the earlier Roman month of Quintilis– in the formalization of the Roman Calendar creating the Julian Calender (yes, that is named for him too).  So, in honor of Caesar, we shall be looking at governments, organization and people of ambition in the Sea of Stars.  As usual, if there is a particular subject you would like to know more about or see more of, please let me know.

June was not quite as productive as it could have been but it did see the following:

Tuesday Magic Item – Blood Debt Chain

29 June, 2010

“You can give me you blood as a sign of your good faith, Count,” said the Sorcerer-Despot, “of I will wring it from you daughter!”  He gestured and the curtain was pulled back, revealing the slender form of the Court’s daughter, bound and  suspended above a bone white bowl.

“Let her go,” said the Count, his voice wavering, “you will have your blood.”

Blood Debt Chain

This heavy necklace is made of looping chains of red gold with seven crystal vials suspended from them.  The vials are usually filled with bright red blood though this can rapidly change.  When the stored blood is used, it magically boils away in a red-gold flash, leaving the vial empty and ready to be used again.  The first blood debt chain was made by the Sorcerer-Despot of Jokin-Tor but the knowledge of how to create these benighted items has slowly spread.

Playing the Long Game – Near Immortal Villains

28 June, 2010

Playing the Long Game
Near Immortal Villains

If you had all the time in the world, what would you do?  What could you do?  Near immortal villains are a staple of RPGs (and their source material) ancient gods, elder dragons, lich-kings, immortal superbeings, ages-old vampires . . . the list goes on and on.  But what would you do with all that time?  Traditionally, create intricate plots that mature over the centuries, just in time for the heroes to interrupt them at the last moment.

The Legend of Betrayal’s Tear

25 June, 2010

Once there was a god who made things, wonderful things, such as the weapons -thunderbolts, arrows of light, swords of flame- that were needed by the other gods.  While recognized as the greatest of craftsmen, he never felt appreciated by the others who used his creations.  He kept such thoughts to himself and kept making wonders, many of which never left his possession.

ICONic Atlanta 1965 – Intro and Resources

24 June, 2010

We are adding ICONS to our list of rotating games for our Wednesday Night group.  As I am running it, it is the continuation of my Champions of the 1960s/Heroes Inc campaign world set in the Silver Age, specifically 1965.

Here is the introduction:

The Year is 1965. LBJ is newly returned to the White House, the conflict in Vietnam continues to expand, while at home the battle for civil rights is being fought.

Into this maelstrom comes The New Atlantians, a superteam for Atlanta and the South sponsored by Coca Cola, Delta Airlines and others seeking to improve (and protect) their city, state and country. Organized by Maj Marcus Jackson, USAF (Ret), acting as government liaison.

New Monster – Armling

21 June, 2010

Armling

These bizarre creatures seem to be just arms, yet they can fly by moving with an undulating motion.  They seek out humanoid whom they seem to have a particular hatred for.  How exactly they eat, or sense for that matter, is not understood but they are dangerous.
