Tuesday Magic Item – Staff of the Ice Saints

22 October, 2013

CrozierThe priest traveled always, at least, so it seemed to him, rarely spending more than three days in any one temple before continuing on his route, bringing news and blessing to all of the communities on his circuit.

Without the staff, blessed by the ice saints, he knew he would not have the strength to continue on the task.  His faith was strong, but the nights were cold and the saints guided him on his tasks.

Staff of the Ice Saints

This staff of polished white wood is topped with a crozier of carved rock crystal.  The staff sheds stains and damage, always returning to its original appearance within a day.

The staff of the ice saints may be used as a weapon, functioning as a masterwork quarterstaff but that is not its primary purpose.  The bearer of the staff is protected by endure elements and gains a +2 sacred bonus to resist exhausted, fatigue, and sleep effects.

The crozier may be commanded to glow with light as needed.

Further it allows the use of the following spells:

•    Spike Stone (1 charge) but made of ice rather than stone
•    Mass Cure Light Wounds (2 charges)
•    Communal Air Walk (4 charges)

The staff recovers one charge each Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox if it upon sacred ground for that entire day.

Aura strong conjuration; CL 9th
Slot none; Price 37,300; Weight 4 lbs
Construction Requirements
Craft Staff, communal air walk, endure elements, light, make whole, mass cure light wounds; Cost 18,500 + 300 for the staff

Notes: The staff is particularly costly for its -relatively- minor powers as it recharges itself (although slowly and only under special circumstances, but leave it in a temple for five years and it is back to full charges).

  1. I like it — colorful. In a fast-paced campaign with little downtime, I would probably allow it to recover one charge per week in the winter.

    • Thought that it would make a nice plot element too, a magic staff left behind in a temple to slowly recover its power. But is forgotten about until the characters are sent to retrieve it from its long sleep.
