Tuesday Magic Item – Honest Ballot Box

2 November, 2010

The votes were tallied again and to everyone surprise, the candidate supported by the big men of the town did not get the most votes.  The brave yet mild mannered tailor did becoming the new mayor.  No one seemed more surprised than he.

Honest Ballot Box

The honest ballot box is designed to counter those that would disrupt the honesty of a fair election, where they come from is unknown but they are almost always marked with the symbol of a torch.  They come in all shapes and sizes, but often they are wood bound with brass with a brass edged slot in the top and a heavy hasp lock.

When a person come to cast their ballot at an honest ballot box, they are temporarily freed from any magical compulsion to vote in a particular way, if their ballot was marked by someone else, it changes to who they wanted to vote for and any ballots stuffed into the box are destroyed by its magic.  Further, only duly appointed officials can open the honest ballot box and it is almost impossible to destroy (hardness 12, 25 hit points) and no damage will befall its contents unless it is destroyed first.
