Tuesday Magic Item – Gate Key Ring

3 January, 2017

Let's go“Are you sure there is a way out?” hissed Gollaon to the lady in waiting.

“The Princess’ escape route has been planned,” she replied, opening the lock to the north tower.

Voddick loosed a bolt down the corridor and was rewarded with a curse.  “They are gathering their courage, they will rush us soon,” he said, recocking his crossbow.

“Come along Princess, time to go,” said Gollaon ushering her through the door.  “Come on, Voddick,” he whispered.

Voddick shot through the door which Gollaon closed, locked and barred behind him.  Voddick kicked a dagger under the edge to wedge it tighter still.  He turned to go down the spiral stairs.

“Up,” Gollaon gestured with his thumb.

“Up?”

“Seems there is an old mystical gate that will be our way out.”

“Lovely, those always work,” grumbled Voddick.

Gate Key Ring

These rings are always composed of alloys or braided metals, mixed resonances serving as a focus for the ring’s magic, sometime set with crystalline gems but always marked with runes and sigil.

When near a gate, the wearer of the ring feels an electrical tingle that intensifies with the closeness and strength of the gate, combined with warmth if the gate leads to the higher planes and a chill if it opens to the lower ones.  This sense gives effective warning of attacks originating from extraplanar space, providing the wearer with a +4 bonus to saves and a +4 dodge bonus to armor class against such.

The major power of the ring is to open gates, planar or transit, for long enough for the wearer and anyone touching them to pass through.  It can do this once a day, if the gate is sealed the wearer must win a contested level check against the level of the seal to pass through though doing such does not break the seal only temporarily circumvents it.

Description as above.

When near a gate, the wearer of the ring feels an electrical tingle that intensifies with the closeness and strength of the gate, combined with warmth if the gate leads to the higher planes and a chill if it opens to the lower ones.  This sense gives effective warning of attacks originating from extraplanar space, providing the wearer with advantage on saves and such attacks have disadvantage on attack rolls against the wearer.

The major power of the ring is to open gates, planar or transit, for long enough for the wearer and anyone touching them to pass through.  It can do this once a day, if the gate is sealed the wearer must make an ability check using Wisdom or Charisma, the DC equals 10 + the spell’s level, on a successful check the wearer can pass through, though doing such does not break the seal only temporarily circumvents it.

Notes: Something for the gate theme for this month.  Characters, or adversaries, could have a wide variety of reasons to want such a magic item.

  1. Excellent item. Will use. Also love the story — very Star Wars, both in plot and dialog.
