Tuesday Magic Item – Silk Slippers of Civilization

10 January, 2017

Stylish“I could get used to this,” said Voddick leaning back and letting the fire warm him as he sipped at a cup of mulled wine.

Golloan tossed another log into the fire.  “Do not,” he said stepping back.  “Sooner or later the hobnailed boots of war will come to tramp upon the silk slippers of civilization.”

“Such as the ones you are wearing?” observed Voddick.

“Just so, might as well enjoy it while we can.”

Silk Slippers of Civilization

These are exquisitely made silk slippers often, but not always, exquisitely decorated, occasionally even with gems.

So as not to disturb the other members of the household, the slippers are almost soundless inside, granting the wearer a +4 competence bonus on Stealth checks.  The slippers resist stains and clean themselves when not being worn, they also keep the wearer’s feet comfortable, clean and their toenails trimmed.

However, they are only designed to be worn indoors, worn outside or over rough ground, they will quickly degrade beyond their ability to self repair.

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item, uncommon

Description as above.

So as not to disturb the other members of the household, the slippers are almost soundless inside, granting the wearer advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that rely on moving silently.  The slippers resist stains and clean themselves when not being worn, they also keep the wearer’s feet comfortable, clean and their toenails trimmed.

However, they are only designed to be worn indoors, worn outside or over rough ground, they will quickly degrade beyond their ability to self repair.

Notes: Inspired by Voltaire’s quote of “History is only the pattern of silken slippers descending the stairs to the thunder of hobnailed boots climbing upward from below.”  Which my history professor back at the University of Portland (Oregon) was found of quoting.  As obviously a society should be spending the money on magic swords and shields not slippers.
