New Monster – Snow Shadow

23 October, 2009

As winter approaches, so does danger:

Snow Shadow

Something moves in snowstorm, a pale blue shadow among the white.  You feel a chill deep in your bones, but not a natural chill, a chill of death.

Draining Chill (Su): The person touched by the snow shadow must make a Fortitude save (DC 14) or take 1 point of Str damage.  The Snow Shadow heals 3 points of damage for each point of Str damage caused, any hit point beyond its usual max become temporary hit points lasting an hour.  The save is Charisma Based and includes a +2 racial bonus.

Ray of Frost (Su): as the 0 level arcane spell used at 3rd lvl (30 ft range).

Snow Control (Su): Snow Shadows can manipulates small amounts of ice or snow as though using mage hand.  They can move up frozen structure as though using the spider climb spell.
Three or more working together can increase the intensity of snow storms (light to medium, medium to heavy, heavy to a blizzard), this takes half an hour of full concentration and lasts for 1d4+1 hours.

Snow Blur (Ex): In any type of snow storm the Snow Shadow gains the effects of a concealment providing a 20% miss chance against any attack, in a blizzard this moves to full concealment (50% miss chance).
Snow Shadows are creatures of the shadow darkness between snow covered peaks, from where avalanches fall, and of icy crevasses, where travelers have fallen to their doom among the freezing snows.

Snow Shadows wait until night and the snow begins to fall, then they move in, striking and withdrawing.  Using their ray of frost when they cannot close.   They aim to isolate individuals and kill them, wearing down groups one by one, leaving them frozen in death as the snow shadows were.

Notes: A riff on the classic shadow, very effective and frightening when used properly.

For D&D 3.x give them  +2 Turn Resistance.
