PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Chiller” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

16 December, 2021

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Forty Nine: Chiller

Guest Starring: Clawz, DoubleUp, Gimmick and Tora.

Ikea-Brooklyn-Warehouse-AislesA friend of Pink’s has just started work in a big box Nordic shop (“Icekia“). she says she is seeing a ghost late at night when she is cleaning and closing up and asks for help.  It turns out the whole chain of stores has an urban legend of being haunted by a frost ghost from back in the Nordic lands, some say it was a tree spirit turned into flatpack furnature, others that it was one of the early worker who was crushed to death when a refridgertor slipped from an extendable forklife, in any case she has been seen in stores all across the world.

So, totally time to Scooby Doo this up.  Early sighting of the ghost end in disappointment and ice, snow, frost and intense cold, with the ghost seemingly vanishing into thin air.  But the idea that it is really a spirit starts to unravel when Gimmick find hidden passages through the warehouse and sliding panels on the display floor.

Cue one overly elaborate ghost trap that manages to totally malfunction yet somehow still capture the frost ghost.   Who is unmasked and revealed as the store’s assistant manager who had been smuggling premium frozen food from the Nordic lands to avoid custom fees and using the frost ghost to keep people from looking to closely at the shipments.  “And I would have gotten away with it if not for you meddling kids!”

What really happened:

We meet at The Pi(e) Hole, a restaurant in circular 3 story building, with the third floor comprised of private rooms (room 4 for us).  While are hired to retrieve a item from “storage facility”  Roughly 1m3 that requires a power source.  Intrigued, we take the mission.

Basement of Ikea, San Angelo, TransTime Cryogenics, retrieve 203 Cyostat requires liquid nitrogen and power for circulation.  No problem, right?  It turns out that Ikea maintains a pretty decent security and the only way to get into the basement that does not involve going down (and potentially back up) steep and not very wel maintained steeps is getting a security key and going down in the middle of the Ikea store.

Turns out TransTime Cryonics hs been there for decades as various things were built over it.  It runs quietly, efficiently and mostly below everyones radar.  As far was we can tell from our research they have extensive power backup and a lockdown procedure in place if the external power is cut.

We ponder and discard various ideas before just choosing a (semi)simple plan, Gidget, Bladez and Tora go in through the basement while PinkCat and DoubleTap go in pretending to be father and (very bored) daughter and buy a refriderator.   The team going in through the basement makes there way through the potentially dangerous cyronic facility with a dolly (the kind you lift things with), power cell, liquid nitrogen and a box.  Once they retrieved Cyrostat 203 and got it packed up, they constructed a refrigerator box around it, changed into Ikea-emplyee like clothes and rode the elevator up.  Then customers DoubleTap and PinkCat collected their new refrigerator and wheeled it out.  (Leaving Ikea with an extra non-inventoried refrigerator and us out the cost of buying one but . . .).

225px-Beastie_BoysWe delivered the Cyrostat which was listed with the names of Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz, and Adam Yauch.  As we handed over the Cyrostat, PinkCat said, “Don’t forget to fight for you right to party.”

The Johnson winked and said, “I’ve got to get going, no sleep til Brooklyn.”

Notes: This was the last game with PinkCat as an active character, she has retired to oversee her “business empire” and work as a fixer and recruiter to a specialized clientele.  We have moved to the 6th World Edition and most of us generated new characters, I need to understand magic better so I did a full mage, Gidget being the connective tissue between the original group and this one.

I will miss PinkCat, she is one of my favorite characters ever.  My new character is fun too but . . .  I may try and get to doing some “Gimmick’s Gang” reports if I feel up to it, this one was already several months late.
