Tuesday Magic Item – Testing Wand

11 August, 2015

Something like thisVoddick frowned as the wooded top at the end of the wand fell off when he picked it up.  “Did I break it?”

Gollaon caught the top before it hit the ground.  “Not at all.  The magic that holds the two together as worn off.”

“But I just saw the scullery maid playing with it and it was working.”

“Indeed?  She may have a bright future ahead then.”

Testing Wand

These mass-produced items are not uncommon in places where magic schools or guilds operate, they are simply enchanted wooden wands with an attuned toy (usually a ball or top) that the wand can make spin or roll.

Review – The Genius Guide to: the Mosaic Mage

30 October, 2011

For a, well, colorful spin on the traditional wizard, the Mosaic Mage nicely fills that role with a suite of spectrum-based abilities and spells.  If you think magic should be more colorful, give the Mosaic Magic a chance.

The Genius Guide to: the Mosaic Mage is a 13-page PDF (12-pages if you remove the credits/OGL page) for the Pathfinder RPG designed by Ryan Costello, Jr. and developed by Owen K. C. Stephens and published by Super Genius Games.  This is part of Super Genius Games’ Genius Guide line.

New Magic Item – Ring of Arcane Harvesting

4 October, 2011

The old wizard smiled as his lightning lashed at his foe, it had been a difficult battle, his rival has send his apprentices and minions out to strike at him and wear him down.  The old wizard was not a cruel man and he had tried to brush them aside with minimal harm, but that -as his rival intended- has cost him more

energy than simply crushing them out of hand.

Now, it was just the old wizard, his rival and the half a dozen bodyguard creatures his rival had summoned.  But the old wizard had no fear, his ring glowed with harvested energy for just an occasion like this.

 Ring of Arcane Harvesting

These rings are either made of or set with crystal, usually they are silver set with criminals, with arcane runes carved on the interior of the ring that are only visible to those with magical talent.

More Sorcerer/Arcane Magic Feats

3 October, 2011

Been playing around with interesting feats to boost arcane spellcasters, mostly sorcerers (such as Armored in Sorcery and Sorcerous Vis), and their options.  In that vein, I present the following feats:

Arcane into Agility
Your ability to absorb excess magic allows you to react more quickly and more accurately.

New Spell – Wax Ward

24 January, 2011

Wax Ward

Wax Ward

The old thief looked at the door and the plain wax seal hanging from the latch.  “We cannot open this, young man,” he said to his apprentice.

“Why not?  It will be easy to cut and the lock is not expensive.”

“It is a magic ward, it keeps the door sealed,” the old thief replied, studying the door.  “And it will mark any who does manage to open it.  There are easier picking to be found, leave this to the fools of the Red Glove.”

L5R Thoughts – the Snake Clan

19 August, 2010

As I have mentioned, the minor clans fill an important role in the Empire of Rokugan filling odd but useful niches and making the Empire a more interesting and complex place.

One of these is the Snake Clan, which was founded by Isawa Chuda who had saved the Emperor from assassination by a blood cult headed by one of the Imperial Magistrates.  The new Chuda Family and the Snake Clan were tasked with rooting out blood cults and defending the Empire (and the Emperor) from such mystical threats.  In canon, the Snake clan become corrupted and possessed by a great evil.  The entire clan is wiped out except for a handful of blood wizards by the Phoenix, these survivor remember their name and eventually become the shugenja family of the Spider Clan.

Not so in my Rokugan.  Read the rest of this entry ?

Organization – Eosiante Directorate of Magic

5 July, 2010

We do what must be done for Eosiant, magic must be controlled and brought to serve the Kingdom’s need.   Lone wizards and cults of unnamed gods cannot be allowed to upset the stability of our Kingdom . . . but their knowledge can be pressed into service with or without their cooperation.

Eosiente Directorate of Magic

The actual government of the Kingdom of Eosiant has become centralized as it has expanded, one of the branches that has become extremely influential is the Directorate of Magic.  Originally founded to license practitioners of magic, essentially enforcing a government monopoly on who was allowed to practice magic their duties have expanded to locating and eliminating unlicensed practitioners of magic, illegal cults and acting as an unofficial foreign intelligence service.

Goal: Magic for the success of the Kingdom
