Tuesday Magic Item – Elemental Seed

Seeds for greatnessGollaon watched, bow ready, as the elementalist dropped small crystals into the prepared areas.  Within moments, man-shaped, but well larger than most people, beings of clay and stone with glittering crystal eyes emerged from the ground, as though swimming up from the depths.

Voddick crossbow snapped.  “I hope you are done with whatever you needed to do,” he said from around the corner.  “Because those demon-riders are almost here.”

The stone and clay beings followed the commands of the elementalist who followed them with Gollaon at their side.  “We are on the way with aid,” said Gollaon as Voddick’s crossbow launched another bolt.

Elemental Seed

These are almost always crystals, usually semi-precious stones, but sometimes they appear as something more unusual: Amber for earth.  Clouds woven into a knot for air.  An ever-burning coal for fire. Unmelting ice or snow for water.  To use the seed, they must simply be placed into a large amount of the appropriate element and an elemental will appear made of that element, who is friendly to the person who awakened them it but not under their control. Lightning Foxes (A to Z, L)

A lightning fox between transitsThere was a flash and a crackle and suddenly. a fox was padding beside me, its fur was crackling with electricity.  I could have sworn it was laughing at me.  I stopped to look at it, it stopped and lookup up at me and then vanished in a flash of lighting.  It reappeared some distance down the path, looking back at me as to say “are you coming?”

Lightning foxes are foxes that were, it is thought, showered by the blood of the one of the gods of the storm during the Gods War.  This has imbued them with both elemental powers and considerable intelligence.  A lightning fox can generate and ride a lightning strike for a short distance or perhaps they transform into lightning and reform where the lightning strikes, it is not exactly known and the lightning foxes do not talk about how their transport power work (or course, they might not know).

It is thought that the lightning foxes can ride a major storm and travel great distances within the lightning leaping from cloud to cloud.  Which explains how earths (as a goup of lightning foxes are known) of lightning foxes have appeared without warning on various islands where they had never been seen before.

They are slightly larger than expected from foxes and come in a wide variety of fur color: red, silver, gold, white and sometimes they change fur color after trasiting through lighting.  Their eyes are often gold or amber and glow quite distinctly when the foxes wish them too.  As they can make they fur crackly with electricity when they wish.

They are effective hunters able to strike from surprise and use coordinated tactics to harry and confuse their prey.  They use similar tactics when defending their dens, though they are happy to simply flee as well, though the youngest kits cannot use their elemetal powers and have to be defended on occasion.

The other other thing about them is that they can reason at quite a high level, at least as well as an average person, and they can talk (though some find their voices annoying).  They maintain a rich and very complex culture of oral histories, philosophical debates and meteorological lore.

They do not mind small settlements near by and occasionally form compacts with them but they avoid large groups of people, such as towns and especially, cities, which they find too noisy and dangerous.  Some people seek the lightning foxes out to learn their histories or philosophies and a very few of the foxes have been convinced to join the crews of sky ships where their talent for sensing and analysing weather patterns is highly regarded and valued.

Notes: These are, of course, the Sea of Stars equivalent of blink dogs but more fun as they are foxes and tied to the elements.  They first show up way back in a Pathfinder adventure I ran back in 2011.

New Monster – Stone Soldiers

Before fully manifestingWhile called stone soldiers, these elemental beings draw from the surrounding area and replicate what in nearby for their form, be that earth, stone or wood, if there are equal amounts of such material around the summoner can choose which material they form from.

They are tied to the spirits of soldiers of the past, gaining instinctive insights into tactics well beyond that of most elementals and appearing in the forms of such soldiers with the apparent armor and actual weapons of such. Without other instruction they will fall back on their historic tactics and seek to continue their half remembered duties.

For D&D 5E: Stone Soldier

Medium elemental, neutral

Armor Class 14 (or 16 with shield, see below)

Hit Points 47 (5d8+25)

Speed Walk 25ft.
STR 16 (+3) DEX 8 (-1) CON 20 (+ 5) INT 6 (-2) WIS 10 (+ 0) CHA 5 (-3)

Saving Throws Str + 5

Skills Athletics +5, Perception +2

Damage Vulnerabilities thunder

Damage Resistances bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical weapons

Damage Immunities poison

Senses darkvision 60 ft., tremorsense 60 ft., passive Perception 12

Formation Fighter
The stone soldiers are used to fighting as a unit and when adjacent to another stone soldier, may use the help action for a adjacent stone soldier as a bonus action. They also gain advantage on Wisdom and Charisma saving throws when in a formation with at least two other stone soldiers.

Soldier’s Soul
A stone soldier gains one of the following fighting styles:

Dueling. When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon. These stone soldier appear with weapon and shield.

Great Weapon Fighting. When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2. The weapon must have the two-handed or versatile property for you to gain this benefit. These stone soldier appear with two-handed weapons, usually polearms.

Actions

The stone soldier makes two weapon or slam attacks.

Melee Weapon. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, by weapon (note soldier’s soul ability above)

Ranged Weapon. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage (for earth or stone) or piercing (for wood). Range 20/60.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage.

The statistics above are for an earthen warrior, a stone warrior has -5 foot speed but +1 Armor Class and a wooden warrior has +5 foot speed and +2 Dexterity and disadvantage on saving throws against fire.

The stone soldiers are used to fighting as a unit and when adjacent to another stone soldier, may use the aid another action for a adjacent stone soldier as a free action. They also gain a +2 morale bonus on Will saves when in a formation with at least two other stone soldiers.

Soldier’s Soul (Ex)
A stone soldier gains one of the following fighting styles:
Sword and Shield, gaining the following bonus feats: shield focus and weapon focus in the weapon they are summoned with.
Two-handed Weapon, gaining the following bonus feats: great cleave and weapon focus (weapon they are summoned with)

The weapon they are summoned with is considered to be masterwork but only in the hands of a stone soldier.

The statistics above are for an earthen warrior, a stone warrior has -5 foot ground speed but +1 Natural Armor and a wooden warrior has +5 foot speed, +2 Dexterity and -2 Natural Armor.

Elemental Candle for D&D 5E

Light the darknessVoddick set the lit match to the yellow flame and both went out.  “That is hard to get used to.”

“True,” agreed Gollaon, blinking after images from his sight.  “But useful.  How often are you going to drop a candle into a fire?”

“And even then you would still have light,” noted Voddick with a grin.

“Good point,” Gollaon grinned back.  “I think we should see about getting some of the others too.”

“Agreed, a candle that burns underwater seems most useful.”

Elementals, in general and in the Sea of Stars

I had mention in an early post that the elemental realms (elemental plane in D&D terms) still interacted with the Sea of Stars, but I have decided this is not longer so as there are no elemental realms anymore.  Not as it “they have been destroyed” but rather, that they never existed.

Reading James Maliszewski‘s It’s Elementary article reminded me about the origin of elementals in D&D and that the elemental planes were a later addition to the D&D cosmology which may have some literary antecedence in Moorcock’s works but I am not sure.

In retrospect, the elemental realms is a concept that is not needed for the Sea of Stars as the realms beyond simply do not play a major role in that setting.  In the Sea of Stars, an elemental is the awakening of the essence of that element, a spark of life and intelligence, but rarely full sentience, imparted to an element.  So, the elements are not summoned, only the animating spark.

Therefore, to create an elemental you need:

  • Magic to create or summon the animating spark.
  • The element you are awakening.  The larger the elemental you wish to awaken, the more of the element you need.

New Monster – Tasked Servitor: Traveling Companion

The Arch-Wizard and Master Conjurer Vablake arrived mounted on a beautifully sleek winged mare, its coat as black as a starless night.  As soon as the conjurer dismounted, the winged mare shimmered and shrunk, becoming a black hair young woman in a simple gray gown who followed Vablake meekly, carrying his satchel.  I had never seen its like that before and I followed, hoping to learn more about this magic . . . . and the strange shape-changing woman.

Tasked Servitor: Traveling Companion

These summoned servants are unique among the tasked servitors in possessing two distinct forms: one humanoid, the other that of a winged mount (usually a horse but occasionally more exotic forms are chosen).

Their humanoid form is almost inevitably attractive and graceful while the mount is always swift and determined in travel.

New Monster – Ruby Hawk

There is a flash of fire and the rabbit lay on its side, burned and dead.  Swooping down to snatch the charred corpse was a hawk of flashing red.  In a flash it has seized its prey and taken wing.

New Monster – Emerald Owl

A first it seemed just a patch of shadows, but then it launched itself into flight.  An owl of the darkest green.  Its eyes flash like gems and seems to know exactly what you are thinking.

New Monster – Sapphire Falcon

Flying at the height of the waves is a bird a blue so pure it is almost painful to look at.  It turns lazily, cutting through a wave as if it was not there, not slowing at all.
