New Monster – Vat Soldier (revised)

16 September, 2013

Vat Soldier
A lumpy, misshapen humanoid carrying a large shield and spear and wearing ill-fitting leather armor.  It does not seem very alert -or bright- but it seems strong enough to be dangerous especially with that spear.

Places in the Sea of Stars – The Polyarchy of Mondas

3 November, 2011

The Polyarchy of Mondas

The Sundering had many effects across the Sea of Stars, some lands were shattered, others were torn apart by volcanoes or flooded, rivers changed courses and oceans boiled away, other effects were more subtle but no less devastating.  The people of Mondas suffered from one of the later, the people of Mondas found that their children were often born sickly, fragile bones were common, and it was becoming worse from generation to generation.

Early Mondasian

Early Mondasian

The people of Mondas turned to their rulers and their rulers turned to their draconic patron.  Wizards and sorcerers, exorcists and curse-breakers tried to find a solution to the sickness but to no avail.  But other solutions were tried, amulets and talismans and then magical frames and support. , Finally one family, brokenhearted by their dying child, made the leap and had her soul moved into a construct body.  Whether this triggered what came next or if it was just symbolic of the fall of the Mondosians, will never be known.

Their children were even weaker, those that were not born dead, more and more of the people of Mondas turned to artificer-mages to make new bodies for their children.  Within two generations, Mondas was peopled only by magical machines, some that remembered being humans, others that knew no life apart from in their mechagical** bodies.  Their numbers were small and only grow slowly as new members are built, usually as children to the current Mondasians.

Tuesday Magic Item – Unswerving Valet

2 August, 2011

The wizard was always well dressed, his brass servant followed him everywhere with two massive bags.  Considering how badly he treated the living servants, I was not surprise that the only servant the wizard could keep was entirely uncaring about the treatment he suffered at that man’s hands.

Unswerving Valet

These are usually inactive when found, appearing as a stylized hat or coat rack with a vaguely man-like shape.  Most are polished brass but some are iron and a very few are decorated.  When its command word is spoken, it animates and follows the orders of the person who gave the command word.  When active, it is a stick figure-like metal humanoid.

New Magic Item – Toy Soldier (Ceramic)

3 December, 2010

For some reason, the bandits thought that the prince would be left unprotected.  But he did seem to be alone on the hill, playing with his toy soldiers.  They surround him and he shouted the word taught to him be his father and then for help.  By the time the royal guards arrived, the bandits had been dispatched and the toy soldiers were covered in blood.

Toy Soldier (Ceramic)

This is a highly detailed ceramic figure of a soldier armed with a spear and two javelins that stands about as tall as an outstretched hand.

New Monster – Ceramic Soldier

2 December, 2010

Ceramic Soldier

The walkway was lined with statues of warriors, all with disdainful expressions on their face, made of fired clay and their martial regalia was painted in fine detail.  Their weapons were quite real however.  So we were not surprised when they animated and moved in close order to block our escape route.

New Monster – Octagon

16 October, 2010

The eight-sided obsidian pillar wrenched itself free of the ground and began drifting forward, slowly spinning.  Fused to the top of the pillar was a wide helmet of dark metal and obsidian, from inside glared a faintly glowing red eye.  Somehow, its hatred was palpable and it quickly began casting bolts of black fire at us.
