The lens returns to the ancient world and the vast and successful Empire of Persia. The first Persian Empire lasted two hundred years and, at its height, it spread from Egypt to the border of India, from the Caucasus to the Persia Gulf. It endured due to its ability to successfully rule over diverse peoples without facing continuous revolts.

Vision 2: Society of Spears – The Spartans

In this issue we will explore one of the most militaristic states in history, the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Sparta.  The Spartans organized their state to support their military and in return the military insured the stability of the state.  This militarism shaped both the nature of the people and the way the state functioned.  The purpose of the Spartan state was to control the subject populations on which they depended: the helots (serfs) who worked their fields. Ave and well met.  Welcome to the first installment of Through the Lens of History where I will take various pieces of history and show how they can be used to make compelling settings and scenarios for games.

The subject of this installment is Ancient Religion; focusing on those of Greece and Rome.  Modern religion in the West is heavily shaped by the success in the Western world of the various Christian denominations and the prevalent separation of Church and State but it was not always so . . .
