Tuesday Magic Item – Ancestor’s Blessing

21 February, 2023

A gift to the spirit worldGollaon watched as Voddick lit a candle and a stick of incense at the small shrine to the ancestors.

“It is good to have someone to watch over you,” said Gollaon.

“They have been helpful in the past,” said Voddick.

Ancestor’s Blessing

This is not a physical item but rather a spiritual one.  One entreats the ancestors for aid, making an offering as well, and, hopefully, they give it.

The offering may be general, for protection, or to a specific ancestor for aid in a particular task.  The offering must be appropriate to the culture and may be incense, food, flowers, poetry, or other things.

The aid given is as follows:

  • General, +1 sacred bonus to any roll.
  • Protection, +2 sacred bonus to a save, increased to +3 if protection against a specific threat was invoked (but may only be applied to such a threat).
  • Aid from a specific ancestor, a +3 sacred bonus to a check that the ancestor was known to excel at, increased to +5 if the ancestor’s favorite thing was given as an offering.

Only one such blessing may be carried at a time and it must be used before the roll is made.

Aura faint necrourgy; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 1,500 (for the shrine); Weight by shrine
Construction Requirements
Craft Wondrous Items, speak to dead; Cost 750 (for the shrine)

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item (shrine), common

First and second paragraph as above.

The aid given is as follows:

  • General, +1 bonus to any to hit roll, test or saving throw
  • Protection, +2 bonus to a saving throw, increased to advantage on the saving throw if protection against a specific threat was invoked (but may only be applied to such a threat).
  • Aid from a specific ancestor, advantage on a test that the ancestor was known to excel with and +1 to the roll if the ancestor’s favorite thing was given as an offering.

Only one such blessing may be carried at a time and it must be used before the roll is made.

Notes: A nice, light way to incorporate aid from the ancestors without a ton of bookkeeping, I hope.  Also the sort of thing you might be able to receive from the Shrine of All Ancestors.
