Tuesday Magic Item – Flame Wood Staff

10 January, 2023

Fire can be your friendGollaon and Voddick paused their tile game to watch the warrior practice with their staff, as they watched, the ends of the staff burst into flames, to the pair’s surprise but not to that of the wielder he continued moving through their martial exercises.

“A fame wood staff!” said Gollaon excitedly, “I remember hearing of them in stories when I was a child.”

“Were not the flame trees lost in the Sundering?” asked Voddick.

“I heard some were discovered on Petrichor,” replied Gollaon.

Flame Wood Staff

These staves are made from wood of the flame tree, its red and black grain looks like hot coals when it catches the light just right.  They are sometimes decorated with a few carvings but not so many as to weaken the staff or make it hard to maneuver.  The Flame Wood staff is warm to the touch and it quickly becomes hot with the ends bursting into flame, which do not harm the staff at all, when used for a period of time.

It is a +1/+1 staff that is neigh immune (resistance 50) to fire damage.

When wielded, the ends become dangerously hot, eventually bursting into flames.  This causes additional fire damage on a successful attack: 1 point of fire damage on the first round of combat, 1d4 points on the second round, and 1d6 on the third and subsequent rounds.  Cooling down when no longer used just as quickly.

It can also protect its wielder, slightly, from hostile flame, by use of an attack of opportunity to interpose it between the wield and the flames this gives a bonus equal to the weapon’s bonus to a subsequent saving throw.

Some of these staves were taken from the trees without proper rituals, these have a minor curse, firstly they will not protect their wielder from hostile flames, secondly, whenever the wielder rolls a natural one when making an attack roll, they take an amount of fire damage equal to the amount it inflicts from a successful attack.

First paragraph as above.

It is a staff that gives its wielder a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it, it is neigh immune to fire damage.

It can also protect its wielder, slightly, from hostile flame, by use of a reaction to interpose it between the wield and the flames, this gives a bonus equal to the weapon’s bonus to a subsequent saving throw.

Notes: Weapons originally used by a cult that has long since vanished.  Not particularly powerful but visually interesting.
