Tuesday Magic Item – Warrior Band Tattoos

15 November, 2022

One of manyGollaon watched as the young warrior was inducted into the war band by receiving an intricate tattoo.  “I find such things both fascinating and disturbing.  To permanently mark one’s flesh in such a way . . . beautiful in its own way but not for me.”

Voddick nodded.  “If it was not vital to membership in the war band, they might not have done it either.  But those tattoo are far from just symbols, they contain magic to allow the warriors to work as a whole.”

Gollaon pondered.  That does make them more intriguing but still, I think, not for me.”

Warrior Band Tattoos

These tattoos are intricate works of craftsmanship showing membership in a particular warrior (or occasionally criminal) band.  Those who are from the same culture are likely to be able to glean some knowledge about the nature of the group through the imagery incorporated into the tattoos. The tattoos bind the group together, visually and spiritually, and provide several benefits:

  • The tattooed person gains a +4 morale bonus to resist any magic or social effect that would turn them against the group or cause them to reveal information about the group.
  • While they are with other members of their group, they gain a morale bonus equal to the number of allies (maximum +4) to shrug off fear-effects.
  • Once a day, the leader of the group can initiate a period of shared focus, the members with tattoos gain a +1 dodge bonus to armor class when adjacent to a fellow tattooed member and the ability to take the help action toward a fellow member as a free action once per round.  This lasts either for one minute plus one minute per four levels of the leader or for as long as the group maintains a martial song.

The tattoos glow and move when their powers are active.

First paragraph as above.

The tattoos bind the group together, visually and spiritually, and provide several benefits:

  • The tattooed person gains advantage on any test to resist any magic or social effect that would turn them against the group or cause them to reveal information about the group.
  • While they are with other members of their group, they gain advantage to saving throws to shrug off fear-effects, as long as they are with three or more allies.
  • The leader of the group can initiate a period of shared focus, the members with tattoos gain access to pack tactics: Each tattooed warrior has advantage on an attack roll against a target if at least one of the attacker’s allies (also under the effect of this spell) is within 5 feet of the target of the attack and the ally is not incapacitated.  This lasts either for one minute plus the proficiency bonus of the leader or for as long as the group maintains a martial song.  Once used, this power cannot be used again until all of those involved have had a long rest.

The tattoos glow and move when their powers are active.

Notes: Of course, these tattoos can also be cursed (see war band of the undying lament) so one should be careful whom they get to do their tattooing.  But they are an effective boost to lower-level combatants.
