Tuesday Magic Item – Bone Flute of Spirit Stilling

Music to sooth the spiritsGollaon listened to the distent music of a flute.  “Rather haunting, no?” he said to Voddick.

“Yes, though I think it is being used to reveal a haunting,” Voddick replied quietly.

“Ghost hunters?” Gollaon asked looking to Voddick.

“Yes, did you not see them arrive?”

“I must have been otherwise occupied.”

Bone Flute of Spirit Stilling

These flutes are made from carved bone, the bone often comes from a person, and they are enchanted, often blessed as well, to play notes that reach beyond this word into the next.  The music of the flute affects those beings who are in the liminal state between life and death, calming and soothing them.The effect the flute has when played depends on what sort of being can hear it:

  • The Unbound (unbodied spirit) are calmed and may be able to be communicated with.  The spirit can break free with a DC 15 Will save (and any attack also breaks them free) and returns the spirit to its previous emotional state.
  • The Unliving (corporeal) are mildly sluggish, suffering a -1 to initiative, attack rolls and reflex saves.  Intelligent unliving can break free from the effect by making a DC 14 Will save.

The effect lasts as long as the flute is played and reaches out 60′ from the fluatist.  If the flutist has skill points in Perform (wind instuments) or a bard, the DC for the flutes effects is increased by one and if both are true, the DC is increased by 3.

The effect it the flute has when played depends on what sort of being can hear it:

  • The Unbound (unbodied spirit) are calmed and may be able to be communicated with.  The spirit can break free with a DC 13 Charisma save (and any attack also breaks them free) and returns the spirit to its previous emotional state.
  • The Unliving (corporeal) are mildly sluggish, suffering a -1 to initiative and Dexterity saves.  Intelligent unliving can break free from the effect by making a DC 12 Charisma save.

The effect lasts as long as the flute is played and reaches out 60′ from the flutist.  If the flutist has proficiency in Charisma (Perform) or a bard, the DC for the flutes effects is increased by one and if both are true, the DC is increased by 2.

Notes: Useful especially for ghost hunter who might be able to calm a ghost long enough to learn why it is haunting a place.  One of these flutes carved from the ivory of an undertaker elephant would also have its save DC increased by one but only if the person using it received it freely as a gift.
