Tuesday Magic Item – Dragon Egg Shield

15 February, 2022

eggs_by_mizaeltenguVoddick looked at his shield and then at the white shield born by the champion, he frowned.  “Does that now seem . . .”

“Like part of a very large eggshell?” finished Gollaon.  “I suspect it is.”

“Surely the only beings with eggs that size are the dragons?”

Gollaon nodded.

“I now wonder who that champion ultimately serves . . .”

Dragon Egg Shield

These shields are made from a section of a dragons egg, some are smooth, others rough, some white, others, other colors.  The edges are sometime reinforced with metal and any straps or grips are magically or alchemically attached.  The shield is surprisingly light and remarkably durable.

The shield is a +3 shield that provides Resistance 10 against one of the energy type the dragon whose egg it was made from was resistant (or immune to) and long as the wielder is aware of the attack.

Its most powerful ability only triggers on the death of its wielder, they are teleported away to a place of safety and the shield becomes a full egg again with the weilder inside.  In [four plus the wielder’s level] hours, the wielder is reborn (as though a reincarnation spell was cast upon them) and if they were not dragon blooded before they are now (one of the Dani in the terminology of the Sea of Stars).  The shield becomes a shield again after the person is reborn.  This ability can only be triggered once a season.

The more closely aligned the wielder is with dragonkine, the harder it is for it egg to pull them back from the grip of death.  One of the least dragon blooded must make a Will save with a DC of 10 + the wielder’s level, this increases by 5 for one with strong dragon blood (such as one of the dragonborn) and by 10 for a half or full dragon.  If the save is failed, they are forever dead, their body consumed and their clothing and equipment scattered around the shield.

Aura strong abjuration and transmutation; CL 13th
Slot shield; Price 95,000; Weight 3 lbs (buckler or light) 5 lbs (heavy)
Construction Requirements
Craft magic arms and armor, protection from energy, reincarnation, teleport; Cost 47,500

For D&D 5E:

Shield, very rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The shield is a magic that provides the wielder with an additional +2 bonus to armor class and Resistance against one of the forms of energy that the dragon whose egg it was made from was resistant (or immune to) and long as the wielder is away of the attack.

Its most powerful ability only triggers on the death of its wielder, they are teleported away to a place of safety and the shield becomes a full egg again with the wielder inside.  In [four plus the weilder’s level] hours, the wielder is reborn (as though a reincarnation spell was cast upon them) and if they were not dragon blooded before they are now (one of the Dani in the terminology of the Sea of Stars).  The shield becomes a shield again after the person is reborn.  This ability can only be triggered once a season.

The more closely aligned the wielder is with dragonkine, the harder it is for it egg to pull them back from the grip of death.  One of the least dragon blooded must make a saving throw, using the higher of the wielder’s Charisma or Wisdom save. with a DC of 5 + the wielder’s level, this increases by 3 for one with strong dragon blood (such as one of the dragonborn) and by 7 for a half or full dragon.  If the saving throw is failed, they are forever dead, their body consumed and their clothing and equipment scattered around the shield.

Notes: Another dragon-themed item for this month’s RPG Blog Carnival.  Seems like dragon egg(shells) should be used for more things than just hatching dragons.
