Tuesday Magic Item – Carmenta’s Book

11 January, 2022

Learn the alphabet or make your own!Voddick watched in fascination as the young scribe added another new ideogram into the book.  “I would have thought it would be filled by now,” he whispered to Gollaon.

“I suspect it would be, were it not enchanted,” replied Gollaon pouring a cup of tea.

“Of course, I should have noticed,” said Voddick.  “I have already seen more pages than could possibly fit in that book.”

Gollaon nodded and handed Voddick a cup of tea.

Carmenta’s Book

These book are very rare, only a few exist and they are prized by their owners, they are slim but tall volumes marked with the owner’s initials marked on the front, changing to match the local language.  The pages are a rich cream color and take ink exceeding well.  The book is, perhaps surprisingly, resistant to almost all damages.

The book has pages, many many pages, more than could possibly fit inside.  The book will always have more pages for the recording of languages, ideas for new things, and medical notes, all other writings placed inside will vanish once the book is closed.

The owner can read any language that is placed inside with a complete alphabet with notes on the the way it works, language based on ideograms take considerably more effort to record.  Only the owner gains this ability, but anyone the owner loans it to can use it as a reference and gains a +4 compentence bonus to linguistic checks when translating between any of the languages in the book.

The owner also gains a +4 competence bonus on Heal checks when performing midwifery or treating children.

Once, when the owner is trying to invent something new, they will gain a great insight into what they need to do to make it happen (this should lead to adventure!).

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item (book), rare (requires attunement but see below)

First and second paragraphs as above.

The owner must attune to the book, but it does not count against the maximum number of items they can attune to, and one they have done so they can read any language that is placed inside with a complete alphabet with notes on the the way it works, language based on ideograms take considerably more effort to record.  Only the owner gains this ability, but anyone the owner loans it to can use it as a reference and gains advantage on any rolls required to translate between any of the languages in the book.

The owner also gains a dvantage on Wisdom (medicine) checks when performing midwifery or treating children.

Once, when the owner is trying to invent something new, they will gain a great insight into what they need to do to make it happen (this should lead to adventure!).

Notes: Carmenta is a Roman goddess with an oddly wide portfolio, childbirth and prophecy, technological innovation, protector and mothers and children and is also said to have invented the Latin alphabet!  Also, today is the Carmentalia, the first of her two feast days (the other is on the fifteen of Jabuary).
