Tuesday Magic Item – Solstice Wand
22 December, 2021“How have we ended up involved in a fight between light and dark? Surely this is above our level of responsibility,” said Voddick fingering the charms hanging off his weapon belt.
Gollaon nodded, “But we are here now.”
“Truth,” he sighed. “And it would look cowardly to leave . . . would it not?”
“Indubitably.”
“Shame.”
Solstice Wand
These wand exist in three states, unclaimed they are relatively unremarkable wands tipped with a dull crystal. But once claimed, it takes on the timbre of its owner, golden and glowing with warm light for those on the side of light, violet and radiating a dim aura of shadows for those servants of the dark.
These wands are tied into the eternal war between light and dark, night and day, and are desired by both sides in this conflict. The bearer gains a +5 competence bonus to Diplomacy checks to those aligned with their faction and the same bonus to Initimidation checks against those from the opposed faction.
The wand has fifty charges and as long as at least one charge remains, it recharged fully at the end of every Solstice. If reduced to zero charges the wand vanishes from your grasp only to appear somewhere far away, fully charged.
The wand can be used for the following effects if the wielder is aligned with the dark:
- Darkness, which the wand’s wielder can see through.
- Fear (costs three charges), DC 19, the wand’s wielder gains one temporary hit point for each being effected by the fear which last until no one is effected by the fear.
- Phantasmal Killer (costs five charges), DC 21, the wielder gains the effects of a false life spell if the victim is slain by this effect.
The wand can be used for the following effects if the wielder is aligned with the light:
- Color Spray (DC 18) and any who fail their save are outlined in fairie fire for 1d6+1 rounds.
- Heroism (costs three charges) that effect both the wirlder and one person they touch.
- Flame Strike (costs six charges), DC 20, 10D6 damage and causes an addition 10 points of damage against servants of the dark.
The wand is tied to greater forces and almost impossible to damage.

First paragraph as above.
These wands are tied into the eternal war between light and dark, night and day, and are desired by both sides in this conflict. The bearer gains advantage on Charisma (persuasion) checks to those aligned with their faction and on Charisma (Intimidation) checks against those from the opposed faction.
This wand has seven charges for the following properties. It regains 1d6+1 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the wand’s last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the wand vanishes from your grasp only to appear somewhere far away. On the Solstice, it regains seven expended charges at dawn and dusk.
The wand can be used for the following effects if the weilder is aligned with the dark:

- To be a Hero (costs three charges) and effect both the wirlder and one person they touch as though they had been subject to both a bless and a heroism (four hit points a round) spell, the wielder has advantage on Constitution check to maintain this effect.
- Flame Strike (costs six charges), DC 18, causes an addition 1d6 of each fire and raidiant damage against servants of the dark.
The wand is tied to greater forces and almost impossible to damage.
Notes: It is the Winter Solstice today and I like solstice themed items. It is a good quest item as both sides want the item and anyone who wants to use it, must align themselves with one faction or another.
