New Monster – Star Cat

19 October, 2021

lion coinThese creatures are philosophers and explorers, curious to learn about new people and worlds.  What they do with that information is unknown, however they are deadly enemies of the Lrueoc and seek to have them destroyed whenever they learn of them (though reluctant to confront them directly).

A proud lion-sized cat, its dark blue fur decorated with constellations.  It opens its mouth and says, through gleaming ivory teeth, “What are your thoughts on the immortality of the soul?”

Philosopher-King. Star Cats seek meaning from the cosmos and have advantage on all Intelligence check related to philosophy and natural science, they also gain advantage on saving throws against emotion-targeting effects and illusions.

Roar: The Star Cat’s roars thunders throughout the cosmos, all in a 45′ cone take 13 (3d8) of each lightning, radiant and thunder damage and are blinded for 1 round and deafened for 1d4 rounds.  A successful DC 15 Charisma save reduces the damage by half and negates the blindness and deafness. It can only use this roar once per encounter.

Stellar Step (recharge 5-6). A Star Cat can use misty step.

Thoughtful Communication.  A Star Cat can communicate through speech with any intelligent being, understanding and being understood by them.

Unseen Companion.  A Star Cat is accompanied by an unseen servant that follows its mental commands.

Vanishing Escape.  A Star Cat can teleport back to its home (wherever that may be) and it can use this ability as a reaction when its hit points are reduced to 20 or less.

Mulitattack. The Star Cat makes two attacks, one with one with its bite and one with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage + 2 (1d4) radiant damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) slashing damage + 2 (1d4) lightning damage.

A lion sized cat with fur that ranges from dark blue to violet decorated with slowly shifting celestial patterns.  Its golden eyes are filled with distant wisdom and its speaks with a deep voice this is, oddly, understandable.

Star Cats seek knowledge and enlightenment and are willing to trade information for information..

Before Combat: Star Cats have no wish to fight, being seekers of wisdom, but they keep their options for escape open and watch those around them with care.

During Combat: The Star Cat will usually begin combat with its roar, using its stellar step ability if necessary to get into the best position.  They prefer not to fight, but if forced, they will focus on taking out spell casters and ranged weapon uses first.  Fleeing the moment the fight turns against them.

Morale: Star Cats will keep talking trying to negotiate even if the midst of combat, but they value their lives above that of other creatures.  They feel no shame in fleeing from combat.

Notes: Random ideas and old science fiction I have been reading crystalized into this creature.  To go with the Star Cat Ring, obviously.  I will try and do a Pathfinder version up at some point.
