Tuesday Magic Item – Painful Lesson Dagger

“But this one seems particularly hard and vicious.”

Painful Lesson Dagger

These daggers are well made and the hilts are made of translucent material as their magic is activated, the hilt becomes darker and darker, and the dagger seems heavier and heavier.  Touching the dagger gives the sensation of promises unfulfilled but that the dagger will help the person get what they want.

It is a +1 dagger of wounding that gives the bearer high resistance to pain, gain +4 resistance bonus to saves against pain-based effects.

When the bearer takes ten hit points or more in damage from an attack, the dagger store one Pain Point, it may store a maximum of such equal to the bearer’s level plus their Constitution or Wisdom modifier (whichever is higher).  They may be spend for the following effects:

  • For the cost of one point, reroll a failed Fortitude save or gain 2d4+2 temporary hit points for a minute.
  • For the cost of two points, reroll a failed Will save.
  • For the cost of three points, reroll any skill check.

Pain points may only be spent once a round.

If the dagger is destroyed, all of the pain floods back into the bearer, causing them to suffer -4 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for ten minutes plus ten minutes per remaining pain point.

The wielder gains +1 to attack and damage roll when using this dagger and hit points lost to the dagger’s damage can be regained only through a short or long rest, rather than by regeneration, magic, or any other means.  Additionally,it gives the bearer high resistance to pain, so they gain advantage on saving throws against pain-based effects.

  • For the cost of two points, reroll a failed Wisdom or Charisma saving throw.
  • For the cost of three points, reroll any Attribute roll.

Pain points may only be spent once a round.

If the dagger is destroyed, all of the pain floods back into the bearer, causing them to incapacitated with excruciating pain for 1d6 rounds plus 1d6 per remaining pain point.
