Tuesday Magic Item – Guardian Hive Amulet

18 May, 2021

Bees“I like bees, they are very industrious,” said Voddick, watching one fly by.

“Our new charges seems quite fond of them as well,” said Gollaon, looking around.

“The bees seem to like them as well, one happy family,” said Voddick with a smile.

“I suspect that has to do with the amulet.”

“That right, it has a bee design, does it not.”

“I suspect that is what cements the friendship.”

Guardian Hive Amulet

These amulets are usually made of precious metals and amber in the shape of a bee (or bees), honey combs and similar motifs.  In appropriate climbs, bees are attracted to the wearer but are never hostile (unless attacked by the wearer).

The wearer of the amulet has a semi-empathic connection to bees and can feel their broad mood.  Bees will not attack the wearer unless the wearer attacks them first.

The wearer is protected against other natural insects, gaining a DR 5/- against insect swarms and such.

Once a day, the wearer may summon bees to defend them, gaining the following abilities:

  • +3 enhancement bonus to Natural Armor.
  • Anyone who attacks the wearer in melee takes 1d6 + wearer’s Charisma modifier (if positive) piercing damage + poison, injury; save Fort DC 12; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Str; cure 1 save as the bees swarm over the attacker.

This protection lasts for 3d6 + Wearer’s Charisma modifier rounds.

Aura strong conjuration; CL 6th
Slot neck; Price 37,500; Weight
Construction Requirements
Craft Wondrous Item, barkskin, summon swarm; Cost 18,750

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item (amulet), uncommon (requires attunement)

First and second paragraph as above.

The wearer is protected against other natural insects, gaining resistance against insect swarms and such.

The wearer may summon bees to defend them, gaining the following abilities:

  • +2  bonus to Natural Armor.
  • Anyone who attacks the wearer in melee takes 1d6 + wearer’s Charisma modifier (if positive) piercing damage and the target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

This protection lasts for 3d6 + Wearer’s Charisma modifier rounds and once used, the protection cannot be used again until the wearer has had a long rest.

Notes: Suggested by my lovely wife, I may do a similar one for butterflies as some point.
