“I was enjoying city life.  A variety of ales and meats makes me quite happy,” said Voddick, only complaining a little.

“Well, there will be new ales and new meals as we travel,” said Gollaon leaning against the ship’s rail.

“Of the later, I have no doubt, the former . . .”

“Have we traveled anywhere where there was not some sort of ale, beer or wine?”

“Not yet, but there is always a first!”

Compass of New Worlds

These compasses are rare, having originally been made for the god of exploration, the design survived and has been replicated by they are challenging to build.  They are ship’s compasses made of fine materials and kept in sturdy and warded boxes to keep them from harm (and malign influences).

The compass is easy to use, providing a +5 competence bonus to Profession (Navigator) and to Survival checks to avoid getting lost.

While the practical use of the compass can be used by anyone, only the owner can activate its major power.  Once a day, it may use one of the following powers.

  • Locate a Passageway through to a specific area, that the ship can traverse, if one exists within 100 km (62 miles).
  • Locate the nearest magic portal within 25 km (15 miles), that the ship can traverse, if one exists.

The compass provides basic protection to the ship (or boat) it is on when it travels to unusual places, giving it the appropriate Resistance to Energy 10 and +3 to the harness of the hull when sailing into new and dangerous waters.

The compass is easy to use, giving advantage to all rolls where a compass would be useful.

While the practical use of the compass can be used by anyone, only the owner can activate its major power (this is not attunement for the purpose of the limits on attuned items but otherwise follows the same rules).  It may use one of the following powers, once used, it cannot be used again until the owner has had a long rest..

  • Locate the beginning of a Passageway through to a specific area, that the ship can traverse, if one exists within 100 km (62 miles).
  • Locate the nearest magic portal within 25 km (15.5 miles), that the ship can traverse, if one exists.

The compass provides basic protection to the ship (or boat) it is on when it travels to unusual places, giving it the appropriate Resistance and +2 to the armor class of the hull when sailing into new and dangerous waters.

Notes: Obliquely inspired by Captain Robert Gray whose first expedition up the Columbia River began on this date in 1792.  But anything that encourages exploration is good in my book.
