Tuesday Magic Item – Ender’s Dagger (A to Z)

6 April, 2021

End the demon's threat“Turning to demons for aid, despicable,” said Voddick.

“Such magic is cheap and dirty but sadly effective,” said Gollaon as he reached down to make sure the dagger was still there.

“The little demons are dangerous enough are you sure that toy is up to dealing with their leader?”

“If luck is with us,” said Gollaon.  “But I can not be sure a single hit will do it, I will have to get in close.”

“I’ll be there beside you.  You do your job and I will keep you alive long enough so you can.”

Ender’s Dagger

This daggers are plain except for inscription against a specific other realm foe (angels, demons, devils or similar) often written in the language of their traditional enemies.  The daggers are well made but almost all are manufactured as fighting weapons with the very rare ceremonial version.

It is a +1 dagger that gives the wielder an additional +2 attack bonus against the named foe as the inscription flares with magic.

When it hits a creature from another realm, it triggers a Banishment effect (good against creature up to 26 HD) with a DC of 25.  Both the roll to overcome Spell Resistance and the DC increase by +2 against the named foe.  On a successful Banishment, the magic of the dagger is discharged entirely rendering it non-magical.

Aura strong abjuration; CL 13th
Slot none; Price 32,302; Weight 1 lb
Construction Requirements
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, banishment; Cost 16,000 +302 for the dagger

For D&D 5E:

Magic weapon (dagger), rare

First paragraph as above.

It is a magic dagger that gives the wielder a +1 to attack and damage rolls the wielder an additional +1 to attack against the named foe as the inscription flares with magic.

When it hits a creature from another realm, it triggers a Banishment effect with a DC of 17, the DC increase by +2 against the named foe.  The dagger glows and crackles with power for the next minute, rendering it unsuitable for combat usage, and if it is broken, the Banishment effect is ended.  On a successful Banishment, the magic of the dagger is discharged entirely rendering it non-magical.

Notes: Pricing an item with a powerful, one-shot effect such as this is tricky.  But it is a good quest item when a creature from outside needs to begotten rid of.  Also, a useful backup to have if one is summoning demons (as was discussed yesterday).
