Tuesday Magic Item – Spear of the Conqueror

9 March, 2021

Chase out the hated somebody“Why are there so many relics that inspire would be tyrants?” asked Voddick.  He took aim and released a bolt.  “It is the poor dolts they convince to follow them I feel sorry for.”

“Truth, my friend,” agreed Gollaon.  “But they seem very committed to their leaders.”

“Unfortunately true,” said Voddick as he recocked his crossbow.  “But still, cannot help but feel for them and their families.”

“But when it is us or them,” said Gollaon with a sigh.

“It will be them.”

Spear of the Conqueror

These spears are heavily built, made of strong wood carefully reinforced with metal.  While well made, they often show signs of use.  In the right light, words can be seen along the blade, usually something encouraging conquest and victory and changing from viewing to viewing, always encouraging its bearer to action and conquer.

It is a +1 long spear that inflicts an additional +1 damage when leading five or more people in battle.  The bearer also gains a +1 enhancment bonus to Charisma when leading, recruiting or training soldiers and warriors.  Additionally, the bearer may use their best save, rather than the save called for, when resisting Fear or emotion-based effects.

As the wielder engages in acts of conquest, the spear becomes more powerful, but to gain the next plateau of power requires greater levels of conquest,  The first is trigger by conquering tens of people, the next by hundreds, then thousands and so on giving the spear the following powers as it moves up in conquest:

  • The bonuses of the spear increase by one, both to the attack and damage and improved Charisma.
  • Armor of the Conqueror, when entering into combat with at least twenty allies on the bearer’s side, the bearer gains 5 temporary hit points multiplied by the Charisma bonus the spear provides.  They last for the duration of the battle and can only be drawn upon once a day.
  • Conqueror’s Leadership, as long as the bearer is unaffected by fear, all allies within sight or earshot of them gain a +4 morale bonus to saves against Fear and a +2 morale bonus to melee weapon damage.
  • Will of the Conqueror, the bearer may use their best save to resist an effect, this may be used one time a day for each bonus the spear currently has.

However, the bearer cannot flee battle until at least nine tenth of the soldiers under their command have withdrawn, to do so causes all bonuses added to the spear from conquest to vanish, returning it to its base power level.

For D&D 5E:

Magic weapon (spear), legendary (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

It is a magic long spear that gives the wielder a +1 to attack and damage rolls and inflicts an additional +1 damage when leading five or more people in battle.  The bearer also gains a +1 bonus to Charisma when leading, recruiting or training soldiers and warriors.

  • The bonuses of the spear increase by one, both to the weapon and improved Charisma.
  • Armor of the Conqueror, when entering into combat with at least twenty allies on the bearer’s side, the bearer gains 5 temporary hit points multiplied by the Charisma bonus the spear provides.  They last for the duration of the battle and once used cannot be used again until the bearer has a long rest.
  • Conqueror’s Leadership, as long as the bearer is unaffected by fear, all allies within sight or earshot of them gain advantage on saving throws against Fear and a +1 bonus to melee weapon damage.
  • Will of the Conqueror, the bearer may use their best save to resist an effect, this may be used one time a day for each bonus the spear currently has and only resets after the bearer has a long rest.

However, the bearer cannot flee battle until at least nine tenth of the soldiers under their command have withdrawn, to do so causes all bonuses added to the spear from conquest to vanish, returning it to its base power level.

Notes: This would have fit well into the Gifts of the Gods theme from last month.  I have been pondering this items for a while and I am fairly happy with how it came out.
