Tuesday Magic Item – God Seed

23 February, 2021

Do you seek to ascend?“Something feels wrong,” said Gollaon, suppressing a shiver.  “Something in the air?”

“I feed it too, like the sky before a storm,” said Voddick.  He scanned the way ahead, his crossbow at the ready.

“I fear it is tied to that amulet of employer has, it has a powerful aura, and it is calling upon powers . . . well, powers that are not always welcome,” said Gollaon.

“Well, at least we were paid half in advance if we have to scarper.”

God Seed

These fragments of divinity come in many forms as varied as the divine being that they are tied too.  Direct symbols are the most common: swords for martial deities, a lantern for a god of travellers and so on though amulets engraved with divine symbols have been used by all.

These items are tied to a spark of divinity, sometimes deliberately set, other times spontaneously imbued, this awakens the item making it a minor magic item (usually +1 or similar power level).  The divine spark seeps into the item’s owner, making them more hardy, gaining a +3 sacred bonus to saves against disease and when calculating natural healing are treated as two levels higher

The spark seeks to build into a fire and will send dreams and subtle encouragements to try and direct its owner to embody the ideals and the divine will.  As the owner performs tasks that advance and build toward the divine ideal, the item becomes more powerful and bestows greater gifts upon it owner.  These gifts come with an ascension towards the divine, as the owner’s mortal form is reshaped toward the god’s form, making it harder to conceal the owners arc toward apotheosis.  These changes are permanent, even if the item is lost or destroyed, the owner’s form remains striving toward greater heights.

For D&D 5E:

varies, very rare (requires attunement)

First and last paragraphs as above.

These items are tied to a spark of divinity, sometimes deliberately set, other times spontaneously imbued, this awakens the item making it a minor magic item (usually +1 or similar power level).  The divine spark seeps into the item’s owner, making them more hardy, gaining advantage on saving throws against disease and gain a bonus of two hit dice.

Notes: More a plot device than a pure magic item and one that needs to be weighed as to how it will fit in the balance of the group, not everyone may be interested in trying to emulate (or restore) a god.  The powers that the item grants must also be tailored to each campaign power level, as it should not overshadow the other characters.  However, following such a path in the Sea of Stars is especially dangerous as the dragon have no wish to see the return of the gods.
