Tuesday Magic Item – Red Banner Flight Lance

2 February, 2021

Charge!“While they would be useful, I am not sure if I would be comfortable on a flying horse,” said Voddick.

“Perhaps to your surprise, I agree,” said Gollaon.  “The fall from a horse on the ground can be painful enough.  And there you are only likely to break one or two bones.”

“Truth . . . and you are a much better rider than I.”

Red Banner Flight Lance

These lances were designed for the elite flying cavalry of the Red Banner Flight by the God of Smiths, though made by his cyclops servants for the most part.  The lances are beautifully crafted and perfectly balanced, the shaft is highly polished reddish wood, the spear head and butt-spike are of gleaming bright steel, though when it reflects light, it seems to be a crimson red.  Streamers and banners are common accoutrements but not universal.

It is a +2 lance that gains the keen quality when used from the back of a mount.  Its easy balance give the bearer a +2 to saves against effect that would knock them from their mount and if they are knocked from their mount they are protected by the effects of a feather fall spell, if applicable.

Once per day, the bearer may impart the Charge of the Red Flight to their mount, giving it a flying speed equal to its running speed (or a +10′ enhancement bonus to what flying speed it already possessed) along with a +2 deflection bonus to armor class for five minutes.

First paragraph as above.

It is a magic lance that gives the wielder +2 on to hit and damage roles when used from the back of a mount, it gains an additional 1d8 of piercing damage on a successful attack.  Its easy balance give the bearer advantage on saving throws against effects that would knock them from their mount and if they are knocked from their mount they are protected by the effects of a feather fall spell, if applicable.

The bearer may impart the Charge of the Red Banner Flight to their mount, giving it a flying speed equal to its running speed (or a +10′ enhancement bonus to what flying speed it already possessed) along with a +1 bonus to armor class for five minutes.  Once this ability has been used, it cannot be used  again until the bearer has had a long rest.

Notes:The color is immaterial and can easily be changed, there can be Blue Banner Flights, Pink Banner Flights, Gold Banner Flights, whatever fits your aesthetic.  Though the Red Banner Flight is referenced in the write up of the Third Celestial Armory and it is another piece for this month’s RPG Blog Carnival.
