Tuesday Magic Item – Dragon Claw Gauntlets

1 September, 2020

Claws and effect“Do wizards imitate dragons because they want their power?” asked Voddick, observing the wizard run through complicated hand gestures wearing gloves reminiscent of a dragon’s claws.

“Does not everyone want a slice of the power of the dragons?” replied Gollaon with a smile.

“Not I, that sort of power attracts trouble.”

“True and we have trouble enough.”

Voddick raised his mug.  “Truth.”

Dragon Claw Gauntlets

These gauntlets are made to evoke the claws of dragonkine and are used by spell-casters to focus their arcane energies and protect the wearer.  Made from heavy leather, usually from rare creatures, with the claws made of metal or alchemically treated claws or talons.

The wearer gains a +1 shield bonus to armor class (raised to +2 if they have proficiency in shields) and the wearer gains a +1 enhancement bonus to attack with ray and touch spells.

The claws can be used as 1d4 slashing weapons but while the gauntlets are worn, the wearer has trouble performing tasks requiring fine control such as opening a lock or writing (taking a -4 penalty to such if appropriate).

Some of the gauntlets are aligned to particular elements, usually set with gems representing that element, when casting spells of that element and of level 1 or higher, the wearer may add their spell-casting attribute modifier to the damage.

Aura moderate adjuration and evocation; CL 7th
Slot hands; Price 7,500; Weight 1 lb
Construction Requirements
Craft Wondrous Item, cat’s grace, shield; Cost 3,750
Elemental alignment increases the Price to 15,000, Cost to 7,500 and adds a 4th level spell of the appropriate element to the requirements.

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item (gauntlets), uncommon or rare, if elementally aligned (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The wearer gains a +1 bonus to armor class (raised to +2 if they have proficiency in shields) and the wearer gains a +1 enhancement bonus to hit with spell attacks.

The claws can be used as 1d4 slashing weapons but while the gauntlets are worn, the wearer has trouble performing tasks requiring fine control such as opening a lock or writing (rolling with disadvantage on such if appropriate).

Some of the gauntlets are attuned to particular elements, usually set with gems representing that element, when casting spells of that element and of level 1 or higher, the wearer may add their spell-casting attribute modifier to the damage.

Notes: A draconic themed item to give spell-casters an edge seems like a good way to start the month
