Tuesday Magic Item – Ring of Inclination Insight

21 July, 2020

I see

“That Countess is sharp tongued and perceptive,” said Voddick quietly, “I would steer clear, my friend.  She might see right through you.”

“Do I hear a challenge,” said Gollaon with a smile.

“No, just a warning,” replied Voddick, taking another cup of wine.

Gollaon did the same and sipped at it.  “Very well, for the moment, I will just observe and learn.”

Ring of Inclination Insight

These rings are usually decorated simply, never garishly, but are obviously valuable and well made.

The wearer of the ring has surprising insight into the inclinations and aspirations of those they interact with, gaining a +5 competence bonus on Sense Motive checks and with five minutes of conversation and a successful Sense Motive check, resisted by the high of the subject’s Bluff, Diplomacy or Will save, the wearer can gain the same bonus on any Charisma based skill used against the subject.  The wearer can only maintain one subject at a time and the bonus is lost when they choose a new one or after a day has passed.

If the wearer can touch a person, they can then see in their cupped hand, that person’s current desire (a Will save, DC 16, blocks this).  This ability can only be used once a day but only a successful reading (i.e. a failed save) counts as a use.

For D&D 5E:

Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The wearer of the ring has surprising insight into the inclinations and aspirations of those they interact with, gaining advantage on Wisdom (Insight) rolls and with five minutes of conversation and a successful Wisdom (Insight), resisted by the subjects Charisma (with higher of Deception, Persuasion or Saving throw proficiency added), the wearer can gain the same bonus on any Charisma rolls used against the subject.  The wearer can only maintain one subject at a time and the bonus is lost when they choose a new one or after a long rest has passed.

If the wearer can touch a person, they can then see in their cupped hand, that person’s current desire (a Charisma save, DC 13, blocks this).  Only a successful reading (i.e. a failed save) counts as a use but then it cannot be used again until the wearer has had a long rest.

Notes: To manipulate people, you need to understand what drives them.
