Tuesday Magic Item – Blue Jacket of Bravery

30 June, 2020

Worn by all the stylish officers.“I am sure I have seen that coat before,” said Gollaon, watching the commander talk with some of the other officers.

Voddick nodded slowly, “Was that not Commander CœurdeLion’s jacket?”

Gollaon’s eyes widened.  “You are right.  The braiding has been removed and it has been repaired, but, yes, it is the same jacket.”

“I am amazed it survived his final stand.”

“It must possess some of his luck.”

Blue Jacket of Bravery

This blue jacket has seen much action and is much repaired, yet the underlying structure remains intact even as braids, ribbons, medals or other decorations are added and removed.  It is a military coat and nothing can be done to disguise that.

It protects the wearer as though it were a +1 chain shirt and as long as the wearer is in sight of their allies, they are immune to fear effects (dropping to a +4 morale bonus to save against fear when alone).  All allies within 30′ gain a +3 morale bonus to resist fear and a +1 morale bonus to melee damage.

One per day, the wearer can give a straight forward order (“hold the line!”  “take the bridge!”) and as long as they lead the effort they gain thirty temporary hit points and a +2 deflection bonus to Armor Class and all allies within 60′ who participate in the action gain a +1 morale bonus to attack and five plus the wearer’s Charisma modifier (if positive) temporary hit points.  The temporary hit points last for the duration of the order.

Aura moderate abjuration; CL 10th
Slot armor; Price 34,000; Weight 4 lb
Construction Requirements
Create Wondrous Item, bear’s endurance, heroism, mage armor; Cost 17,000

For D&D 5E:

armor (jacket), very rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

It protects the wearer providing 13 + Dex modifier Armor Class (which is considered magical if cases where such matters) and as long as the wearer is in sight of their allies, they are immune to fear effects (dropping to advantage to saving throws against fear when alone).  All allies within 30′ gain advantage on saving throws to resist fear.

One per day, the wearer can give a straight forward order (“hold the line!”  “take the bridge!”) and as long as they lead the effort they gain thirty temporary hit points and a +1 bonus to Armor Class and all allies within 60′ who participate in the action gain a +1 to attack rolls and five plus the wearer’s Charisma modifier (if positive) temporary hit points.  The temporary hit points last for the duration of the order.

Notes: Inspired by Blue Jacket or Weyapiersenwah, a war chief of the Shawnee people but I like any item that encourages people to be heroic.
