Tuesday Magic Item – Plague-Slaying Blade

17 March, 2020

Strike at the heart of the diseaseVoddick and Gollaon paced behind the paladin and her glowing blade.  Voddick leaned in to his friend and whispered, “She does not seem like she needs protecting to me.”

“I hope you are right,” replied Gollaon, also whispering, “the worry would be that this disease is not just a run of the mill outbreak and masterminded by some force or being.”

Voddick shivered.  “I could go a lifetime without fighting plague wraiths again.”

“Truth.”

Plague-Slaying Blade

These weapon are usually swords, but the occasion polearm has been made, the blades are of gleaming steel decorated with sigils of health and wards against disease often in gold or silver.  The grips are usually wrapped in white leather or linen.

There are +1 ghost-touch disease-bane weapons and the wielder gains a +2 sacred bonus to armor class and saves against disease-bearing or embodying creatures and spells or other effects that cause disease.

Arguably, the weapon’s greater power is that to slay disease directly.  By striking a sick person, the blade will remove disease, substitution the weapon’s attack roll for a caster level check.  Each strike causes 1d3 points of damage to the infected person and, when cured, an amount of hit points equal to the number of stages the disease has progressed to the wielder.  The wielder may chose to take three points of damage rather than inflict any damage on the infected person.

Aura moderate conjuration; CL 9th
Slot none; Price 27,000 + cost of weapon; Weight as weapon
Construction Requirements
Craft Magical Arms and Armor, protection from evil, remove disease; Cost 13,500 + cost of weapon

For D&D 5E:

Magic weapon, rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

There weapons give the wielder a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls, this bonus increased to +3 against disease causing targets and it inflicts an addition 2d6 points of radiant damage against such targets.  Additionally the wielder gains a +2 bonus to armor class and advantage on saves saves against disease-bearing or embodying creatures and spells or other effects that cause disease.

Arguably, the weapon’s greater power is that to slay disease directly.  By striking a sick person, the blade will remove disease as though using lesser restoration.  Each strike causes 1d3 points of damage to the infected person and 1d6 points of damage to the wielder.  The wielder may chose to take three points of damage rather than inflict any damage on the infected person.

Notes: Something disease fighting seemed to be called for by the current situation and this is something for literally fighting disease.
