Tuesday Magic Item – Gift of Life

10 December, 2019

Like the phoenic, you riseGollaon coughed up blood and sat up, his eyes wide and starting.  “Wha . . .” he coughed again.  “What happened?”

“You took a spear to the chest, hit your heart and lung,” replied Voddick.

“Sounds bad,” croaked out Gollaon.

“You have no idea, you were stone dead, my friend,” replied a grave Voddick.

“Then how?”

“That your lover of yours, the one you charmed last week was more taken with you then I thought.  They pushed themself to the bring of death to bring you back.  We have them wrapped up in warm blankets, they should recover, given a few days of peace.”

“Did we win that at least?”  Gollaon tried to look around.

“I think so,” nodded Voddick, “for the sake of both of you.”

Gift of Life

These tokens come in a variety of shapes and sizes, always made of silver or more valuable metal sometime decorated with designs in enamel or inlaid in other precious metals, the design call to healing, life and rebirth, a phoenix being especially popular.

The Gift of Life is accurately name, it lets the owner give almost all of their life force to bring another back to life.  They can touch a person within an hour of their death and cast raise dead upon them.  The cost to the user is that they are dropped to a number of negative hit points equal to three quarters (rounded down) of their Constitution score.  If they survive, they suffer one point of Constitution drain.

If someone is forced to use this item to save someone’s life, the person (or persons) that forced them to do so is cursed and if the user dies, they have the option to come back as some form of vengeful spirit.

First paragraph as above.

The Gift of Life is accurately name, it lets the owner give almost all of their life force to bring another back to life.  They can touch a person within an hour of their death and cast raise dead upon them.  The cost to the user is that they are dropped to zero hit points with one failed death save.

If someone is forced to use this item to save someone’s life, the person (or persons) that forced them to do so is cursed and if the user dies, they have the option to come back as some form of vengeful spirit.

Notes: What greater gift could you give?  The curse, to be defined by the CH, and the possible avenging spirits are to prevent tyrants from using them to keep their most valuable people alive without real problems.  That does suggest a potential scenario where the player characters are higher to protect a noble family from “evil spirits” only to find they are the spirits of people forced to sacrifice their lives to keep the noble family alive.
