Tuesday Magic Item – Last Battle Medallion

12 November, 2019

RememberVoddick and Golloan stood alongside the old folk, veterans of wars that had ended years, decades ago, clad in their armor, some finely polished, other patchwork.  They did not let their age bow them as they stood waiting for what they knew would be their final battle.

“A finer company could not be asked for,” said Voddick.

“Truth, my friend,” replied Golloan.  “Together we will half the invaders long enough for the next army to be raised.  These fine people will not give up.”

“No, we will not,” said the old woman next to them, the paint on her shield faded but her spear was newly polished.  “They will see our mettle and be broken by it.”

Last Battle Medallion

These medallions are usual made in small numbers for the veterans of a particular group that served together, often with something related to the service they performed together with a personal token on the back.

Worn, they provide a +4 morale bonus to saves against Fear and, once a day, the wearer can gain a number of temporary hit points equal to their level for 1d4+1 minutes.

Once, and only once in a lifetime for a person, the medallion can restore them to their fighting prime: all penalties due to age are wiped away, any combat skills that had atrophied from disuse are restored, limbs crippled are made whole, sight is restored to weary eyes, they are at their physical peak.  Additionally, they are immune to Fear and gain a number of temporary hit points equal to twice their level.  All of this lasts for the duration of one battle, then it fades and the wearer is fatigued.

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th

First paragraph as above.

Worn, they provide advantage on saving throws against Fear and, once a day, the wearer can gain a number of temporary hit points equal to their level for 1d4+1 minutes.

All of this lasts for the duration of one battle, then it fades and the wearer has two level of exhaustion.

Notes: Inspired by thoughts of old soldiers on Veteran’s Day and of the Roman Triarii (the old veterans and final reserve of the Legions of the Roman Republic) of whom the saying “It comes down to the triarii” (res ad triarios venit) meant that the situation had become totally desperate.
