Tuesday Magic Item – Tyrant’s Timepiece

23 July, 2019

Is your time up?“The King certainly is a nervous fellow,” whispered Voddick.  “Do you think it is negotiating with his former slaves or something else?”

“All tyrants fear for their position,” answered Gollaon also in a whisper.  “And losing a war against his former slaves can not of helped his standing.  I am glad we will be leaving soon.”

“Civil war?”

“Or bloody repression, either one, I have no wish to be involved in.”

Tyrant’s Timepiece

These time pieces, usually pocket watches, are of the very finest make, fit for a king one might say.  The are often decorated with the coat of arms or other symbols of the person it was made for.

Firstly, they are an amazingly precise for whatever type of time piece that are, a true masterwork.  The bearer gains a +4 equipment bonus to skill checks that require precision timing.

Secondly, while it is in someone’s possession, that person cannot be surprised by an attack on them.  They always have a sense of it just before it happens.  This does not protect anyone with them from being surprised but the bearer never is.

Thirdly, and the most perplexing, when the bearer is in a room of two hundred or more people, the timepiece will warn the bearer of plots against them: “Someone seek to murder you”, “A conspiracy to steal your taxes is in progress.” and so on.  The information is always accurate and there is never any way to use the timepiece to be able to pin down the conspirators.  It simply serves as distant warning and a prod to the paranoia that any true tyrant must cultivate.

Aura strong divination; CL 13th
Slot none; Price 70,000 + cost of the timepiece; Weight

Craft Wondrous Items, mending, vision; Cost 35,000 + at least 1,250 for the timepiece

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item (time piece), very rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

Firstly, they are an amazingly precise for whatever type of time piece that are, a true masterwork.  The bearer gains advantage on attribute checks that require precision timing.

Notes: An excellent item for a villain, it helps to explain why they were aware of plot x against them and helps prevent them from being killed by a surprise attack.
