PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Vaseless” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

15 May, 2019

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Forty Three: Vaseless

Guest Starring: Doc Cav, DoubleUp, Rani, Tora and introducing:

Gimmick, a tech-savvy cat that was raised by mice.  (Stand in for Gidget, a human techie born into a family of dwarves.  Played by L1 as a replacement for DD/BB.)

Ming Vase, really!Pink and friends go over to their new friend Gimmick’s house for a sleepover, Doc Cav and Double Up acting as chaperones as Gimmick’s parent will be out of town.  They are given particular instructions about bedtimes and such, but most importantly, keep the very valuable vase (that has been passed down through the generations) safe.  Of course, this is the night that a group of thieves decide to try and steal it!  So, much classic shtick happens along with callbacks to classic movies such as Risky Business and Home Alone, the vase is saved (multiple times) and the thieves are eventually caught and turned over to Officer Bloodhound (who accepts the collar with poor grace).

What really happened:

Auction HouseWe are hired for an acquisition mission by our reliable contact Mr Li, extracting an antique vase from an auction house.  The vase had been replaced by a fake and it would be embarrassing to the owner if that was revealed.  Scouting and identifying weak points in the system took a considerable amount of time, we forged an antique gun and got a tour of the facility as potential sellers.  The vase was stored in the basement in a locked, climate-controlled lockbox in a secured room.  So, a minimum of three doors plus a lockbox to penetrate to retrieve the target.  Hopefully without setting off any alarms.

Conveniently, there was an open air concert in a park across the street and the auction house was hosting a soiree to enjoy it.  Pink used her network of contacts on the Matrix to gin up interest in the concert and got the appropriate licenses and permits to have Great Grape Catering and Tacosaurus Rex set up as vendors.  Pink uses Great Grape to trade wine for the soiree in exchange for access to the auction house’s restrooms.  Toru uses that access to steal a guest badge, which we copy.  Double Tap, Gidget, Rani and Toru mingle with the guests until they can slip away into the stairwell, where a holographic projection show them getting down and dirty as they actually slip down unseen to the basement level.  Cracking the door is easy but it has a drop grade, so Double Tap stays back with a brace in case it triggers and the other three head forward, the second lock falls just as easily as the first (hooray for tours and research on the locking system used).  We run Boris (a spider drone) through the HVAC system to the interior of the storage box and use the drone to initiate a factory reset, again research is your friend, and the vase is obtained!  Boris scuttles off to reset another box as the team began to exit.  Unfortunately, the security drone was alerted which also triggered the security gate, the gate was caught on the prepared brace and the team made a run for it.  With various degrees of style they slide under the security gate.  Which broke the brace just in time to fall on the drone.

Outside, Cavalier dropped a mock gas grenade (foul smelling smoke) into the party on the open upper level shouting “There will be a reckoning!”  As a distraction, it was surprisingly effective though may end up with a rough description of Cavalier on the terrorists watch list.  When the rest of the team came pelting up the stairs and ran smack into a security guard.  “Terrible place for an orgy,” said Toru right before Double Tap punched the guard in the face with a shock glove for an instant KO.  Blending in with the crowd fleeing the “chemical attack” they flee the scene and are picked up by Pink and the van.  We are paid and Double Tap scores the false vase as a bonus.

Notes: This mission was split over two sessions and Cavalier joined in for part two.
