PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Surfs Up!” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

2 April, 2019

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Forty Two: Surfs Up!

Guest Starring: DoubleUp and Rani (and in the cartoon everyone else too)

At the beach

It is spring break and everyone has decided to go to the beach!  This is basically a fan service / remember all the characters? episode with cameos from all of the characters who have graced the cartoon in the past with lots of jokes about California celebrity culture, surfing, tiki style, and suchlike.  Lots of short scenes and visual jokes, a musical number, and just a celebration of the cartoon and California as a whole, a very upbeat and colorful episode that moves nothing forward but is just entertainment.

What really happened:

Tiki Tiki TikiWe are hired for a courier mission, pick up a suitcase in Santa Cruz, deliver it to San Francisco, no questions asked.  Seemed simple enough.  We scouted the meet location, prepared disguises for us and the vehicle (Double Tap’s Humvee) and were as prepared as we could be.

The pickup went smoothly, we bagged the case to seal away any trackers on it, pulled into a parking structure to switch the appearance on the car (including putting the surfboard we had inside the humvee) and headed back to San Fran the long way, going inland and then north.

We thought that we were being tailed for a bit but then they pulled off.  So all was going well . . . until we hit a Long Star checkpoint looking for some criminal reported in the area.  While waiting to get through, we noticed the minivan that had been following us earlier six cars back in line.  PinkCat sets up some agents to attack the Lone Star matrix connection when the vehicle two after us approaches the check point which locks it down, trapping our tail well behind us.

Unfortunately, they had friends, two ramps down, a pair of black SUVs charge onto the highway trying to box us in.  Reny tries to keep them back with shots from a borrowed heavy pistol and PinkCat keeps our vehicle safe from interference.  One of the pursuers rammed the team’s Humvee but came off worse for wear and dropped behind.  The other SUV closed for another attempt and we popped the back hatch and threw the surfboards into their windscreen with magic fingers, they lost control and spun out, the following SUV had to swerve to avoid crashing and also went off the road.

PinkCat had left a pair of drones to watch the drop site and our paymasters seemed to have a bit too many people there, so we changed it at the last minute en route.  Ultimately, the exchange went off without problem and we took the humvee to Sparky’s Place for repairs.

Notes: Small group due to children’s birthdays and things.
