Tuesday Magic Item – Winter Whip

5 December, 2018

A whipping chillVoddick made sure his cleats where tightly attached to his boots before he opened the door and stopped out into the driving snow.

Gollaon followed.  “Well, the pay is good.”  He said through the scarf wrapped around his face.

“I do not mind, the ice, or the snow, or even the bitter wind,” said Voddick.  “But I hate falling and looking ridiculous.”

“True,” nodded Gollaon.  “Pride does help keep one warm.”

“Damn straight.”

Winter Whip

These whips are made of white leather, taken from arctic creatures, the grip is wrapped around a length of rock crystal and tied with silver wire.  They are cool to the touch, moving to cold when used.  Frost gathers around the whip when it is set down, even in summer weather.

The winter whip is a +2 whip that deals an extra 1d3 points of cold damage on a successful hit.  When used to entangle, the target must make a Fortitude save (DC 16) or take 1d3 points of Dexterity damage.  Lastly, it may strike a surface and coat it in ice (5′ x 5′ by default but up to a 10′ x 10′ area if desired) with the same effect as a grease spell (DC 14) that lasts 2d6 rounds (+/- up to 6 rounds depending on the ambient temperature).

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 7th
Slot none; Price 13,301; Weight 2 lbs
Construction Requirements
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, chill touch, ice storm; Cost 6,500 +301 for the whip

For D&D 5E:

Weapon (whip), rare (requires attunment)

First paragraph as above.

The winter whip gives it wielder a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls and deals an extra 1d3 cold damage to any target it hits.  When used to successfully entangle or trip, the target must make a Constitution save (DC 14) or lose 1d3 points of Dexterity which are restored after a short or long rest.

Notes: A magic weapon to fit with the winter theme for the month and whips are under represented in magic weapons.  This one gives its wielder considerable ability to influence battlefield mobility.
