Tuesday Magic Item – Cloak of a Thousand Wings

25 September, 2018

Sewing the birdsGollaon watched the aristocratic officer walk by, his gaze envious.

“It is the cloak you want, is it not?” asked Voddick once they were out of earshot.

“Yes, thrice-damn it, it is amazing,” replied Gollaon.

“We could steal it once out contract was up?”

“Tempting,” said Gollaon with a smile.  “Let us get a drink and scheme.”

“I will always take a drink, my friend.”

Cloak of a Thousand Wings

These cloaks are embroidered with many, many birds, if made perfectly five hundred of them.  The very act of crafting such complex item imbues the cloak with a certain low level of magic which can then be strengthened through further enchantments.

While the cloak is worn, it protects its wearer like a feather fall spell, activated immediately if the wearer falls more than fifteen feet.  Additionally, if the wearer has or gains a fly speed, they gain a 15′ enhancement bonus to such speed.

A number of times a day equal to the wearer’s level, they may use either of the following abilities as a standard action:

  • Pluck a bird from the cloak and set it to deliver a single verbal message to someone you know within one hundred miles, the bird will fly (at the rate of twenty miles an hour) and deliver the message.  If it has been told to, it will return (at the same rate) with a reply.  The messenger bird can be killed (AC 21, DR 5/-, HP equal to the wearer level plus Charisma bonus) if one knows to try.
  • Pluck a bird from the cloak and have it fight as an ally of wearer for 1d10+the wearer’s level rounds.  Treat this bird as an eagle with DR 5/magic.

First paragraph as above.

While the cloak is worn, it protects its wearer like a feather fall spell, activated immediately if the wearer falls more than fifteen feet.  Additionally, if the wearer has or gains a fly speed, they gain an additional 15′ of such speed.

A number of equal to the wearer’s level, they may use either of the following abilities as a action:

  • Pluck a bird from the cloak and set it to deliver a single verbal message to someone you know within one hundred miles, the bird will fly (at the rate of twenty miles an hour) and deliver the message.  If it has been told to, it will return (at the same rate) with a reply.  The messenger bird can be killed (AC 18, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, HP equal to the wearer level plus Charisma bonus) if one knows to try.
  • Pluck a bird from the cloak and have it fight as an ally of wearer for 1d10+the wearer’s level rounds.  Treat this bird as a blood hawk with Damage Resistance bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks.

The uses reset after the wearer takes a long rest.

Notes: Something a little mythic as we have just passed the fall equinox.
