Tuesday Magic Item – Alamarian Dulcimer’s Ring

28 August, 2018

A ring of music

Voddick sipped at his spiced ale.  “I hear that Evard’s Black Orchastra is playing tomorrow.”

“That is the band of Alamarian Dulicmer’s children, yes?” asked Gollaon.

“Yes,” nodded Voddick, “they are all adults, it is no children’s chorus.”

“I met Dulcimer’s once.”

“Yes?  I would think you would get along.”

“Well, he had even more of a roving heart than me,” replied Voddick with a grin.  “It was a pleasure to watch a master at work.”

Alamarian Dulcimer’s Ring

These rings are silver and decorated with musical symbology, dropped on a hard surface, it chimes musically (and for much longer than it should).  Some, many, have dedications as they were given as gifts.

The ring has several powers, the first is that it increases the ability of the wearer to feel the flow of music and be part of it, providing a +4 competence bonus on any Perform checks that involve music.

Secondly, the wearer’s music is more able to strike emotional keys and they gain a +1 bonus to the DC of any emotion effecting music (or magical music) they perform.

Lastly, the wearer become more susceptible to their own desires and suffers a -4 penalty to any save to resist any temptation they would be attracted to.

For D&D 5E:

Ring, rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The ring has several powers, the first is that it increases the ability of the wearer to feel the flow of music and be part of it, providing the wearer with advantage on any Charisma (Performance) checks that involve music.

Secondly, the wearer’s music is more able to strike emotional keys and they gain a +1 bonus to the DC of any emotion effecting music (or magical music) they perform.

Lastly, the wearer become more susceptible to their own desires and suffers disadvantage to any saving throw to resist any temptation they would be attracted to.

Notes: Inspired by the mythological stories of legendary rock stars in general and the father to Evard’s Black Orchestra (who had a cameo in a recent 5E game I DMed) in particular.  As Alamarian Dulicmer rarely tried to refuse his desires, the downside of the rings magic usually worked in his favor.
