Tuesday Magic Item – Emancipation Key

For opening locksVoddick wedged his stout blade and twisted it to shatter the lock holding the gate chained.  “So much for that.  You have the key?” he asked quietly.

“Of course,” said Gollaon, keeping watch as Voddick slipped into the compound.  After a moment he followed.

“It seems they are not expecting people to break into the slave pens,” muttered Voddick.

“An error that will cost them . . . if we succeed.”

Emancipation Key

These keys are unremarkable, usually made of iron or brass, whichever is in common use in the area they were made.  They are faintly inscribed with magic sigils which cannot be easily seen but can be felt.

These keys are surprisingly easy to hide, if one is a slave or escaped slave, the possessor has a +4 competence bonus to Slight of Hand checks to conceal it and any guard, slaver or other agent of a slave regime, unless the person is specifically searching for a key (rather than some other sort of contraband), suffers a -4 penalty to their Perception check to find the key.

The key will reshape itself to help open any non-magically warded lock, counting as a set of thieves tools for avoiding penalties and providing a +4 competence bonus to Disable Device checks to open locks.  Once a day, it can cast knock, if the holder is willing to take 1d4+3 points of Constitution damage and drain the key of all power for a day, this can be changed into a Knock that will effect all locks, welds, shackles, or chains that confine people within 60′ of the key holder.

These keys are surprisingly easy to hide, if one is a slave or escaped slave, the possessor has advantage on any roll to conceal it and any guard, slaver or other agent of a slave regime, unless the person is specifically searching for a key (rather than some other sort of contraband), suffers disadvantage to their Wisdom (Perception) roll to find the key.

The key will reshape itself to help open any non-magically warded lock treat as a set of thieves’ tools for those with that proficiency and it provides advantage to rolls to open locks.  It can cast knock, this property of the key can not be used again until the next dawn; if the holder is willing to take four levels of Exhaustion and drain the key of all power for a day, this can be changed Knock that will effect all locks, welds, shackles, or chains that confine people within 60′ of the key holder.

Notes: In honor of Juneteenth (or Freedom Day), a tool for freeing those enslaved and oppressed.
