Tuesday Magic Item – Sword of the Saopha

6 March, 2018

BraveGollaon ducked behind a tree and Voddick knelt behind his shield, both tree and shield caught arrows.  “As long as the left flank holds, I think the battle is ours,” said Voddick.

“They will hold, their commander will see to it,” replied Gollaon, stepping out long enough to loose an arrow and then ducking back.

“The soldiers are solid too.  Now we just have to keep from being perforated before the fight ends.”

Sword of the Saopha

The blades of these finely made swords are usually decorated in gold or silver, detailing the heritage of the noble it was made for.  The grip is usually horn wrapped with leather or cord.  They are prized possession of the noble caste and losing one is seen as a stain on a family’s honor.

The Sword of the Saopha is a +2 sword that allows the wielder to use their Charisma modifier (minimum of +1) to their saves against Fear.

But is is when the bearer is leading a military unit that the sword’s deeper powers are revealed:

  • The bearer gains their level plus their Charisma modifier (minimum 0) in temporary hit points for one hour, as a free action, once a day.
  • The bearer and all allied soldiers within 30′ of the bearer cannot become greater than shaken from fear as long as the bearer is conscious and for two rounds after they are taken down.
  • When leading a charge, the bearer gains a +1d4 bonus to melee damage as do all adjacent allies.

First paragraph as above.

The Sword of the Saopha gains a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon and the wielder gains proficiency to any save made against Fear.

But is is when the bearer is leading a military unit that the sword’s deeper powers are revealed:

  • The bearer gains their level plus their Charisma modifier (minimum 0) in temporary hit points for one hour, as a bonus action, once a day.
  • The bearer and all allied soldiers within 30′ of the bearer while frightened cannot be forced to flee as long as the bearer is conscious and for two rounds after they are taken down.
  • When leading a charge, the bearer gains a +1d4 bonus to melee damage as do all adjacent allies.

Notes: Mostly designed to ensure a unit does not give into panic and can always retreat in good order as long as its commander is alive.

Saopha was a royal title used by the hereditary rulers of the semi-independent Shan States in what is now Myanmar.  The Shan were, and are, well known as brave warriors.
