PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Toy Story” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

31 December, 2017

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Thirty Three: Toy Story

Guest Starring: Clawz.

So many toysToys are going missing from the drop boxes for local charities, so Pink, Glitter and Clawz decide to look into the mystery.  They start by staking out local donation sites which lead to a variety of misunderstandings, accidental snagging people secretly donating toys, little kids sneaking a look, even some debil rats trying to steal donated candy.  Unfortunately, none of this gets them any closer to finding who really is stealing the toys.  So they gather at StellarBucks to discuss the situation and have hot chocolate.  While waiting, they see a group of homeless kids sneaking by and follow them, they are the one taking the toys!  The team confronts them with food and blankets and places to stay and gets them to a much happier place for the holidays.  Happy Holidays everyone!

What really happened:

Muscle CarThis adventure started in media res with Sparky, PinkCat and Bladez having just made a dead drop of some stolen data hidden in a stuffed animal into a toy collection bin.  As they pull away, members of the Sons of Hecuba, a mercenary ork go-gang, grab the toys, stuffing the in the back of two muscle cars and a chase ensues.  We try reason with them, via hacked comms, and then running them off the road (after they tried to do the same to us) but then they managed to escape us, surprisingly the go-gangers were better drivers, who knew?

But as Pinkcat had hacked their comms, we just followed at distance, finally tracking them down to a warehouse.  We send in a drone and see two black SUVs. Jjoy it is a Yakuza controlled warehouse, with five Yak guards and three suits looking for something among the toys which have been dumped onto a bunch of folding tables.

While Bladez and Sparky sneak into the warehouse, Pinkcat messes with the gang and Yaks communications, trying to make both sides (already ill at ease with each other) even more nervous.  But it is Bladez rolling a smoke grenade into the gang members that sparks chaos and a firefight.  Sparky and Bladez grab our toys and the ones the Yak seemed to want and booked it, fortunately avoiding being shot along the way.

We contact our employers and arrange a new dead drop for the data.  In the Yak toys were a shipment of BTL (“better than life”) chips which we turned one of each type over to our Triad contact, to let him know what the competition was peddling, and trashed the rest.  Later news reports indicated that a mysterious fire engulfed the Son of Hecuba headquarters, oh dear.  Such is life in the criminal underworld, not a very happy holidays for some.

Notes: This was our Crimbo-like adventure for the NorCal group.  Very light game, just three players.
