PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Haunted House” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

27 November, 2017

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Thirty Two: Haunted House

Why didn't we notice that before?Guest Starring: BB, Double Tap and Toru.

Some of the students have been daring each other to go into the spooky house at the end of the lane, finally a group did . . . and they did not come back out!  Pink and crew decide to go in and rescue them, as heroes do.  Cue lots of Scooby Doo, Ghostbuster and other ghostly pop culture references.  There are chases by “ghosts” that turn out to be rats, bats, cats and wind blown sheets.  Eventually, our heroes make it to the basement where they find a secret dance club.  The students did not come out because they were having too much fun.  Big dance party to end the episode.

What really happened:

Subdivions as far as the eye can seePinkCat was contacted directly by Silver Fox, an old school decker and personal hero of PinkCat, to look into the disappearance of her nephew.  Something Silver Fox would normal deal with herself but she is out of town on a job and she trusts PinkCat to handle this (which makes her feel so good).

Eric, works various part-time jobs (barista, janitor) and is an unsuccessful author, however he bought a house in Danville suburb at auction, area recently reclaimed from squatters.  His ex-wife in Palo Alto and any dispute about custody of their daughter is quickly ruled out.  As are job problems, so to Danville, his last known location, we go.

At the house, we find his bike, unmolested.  Some of the other houses may have been occupied, we never tried to look into them but we did not see any other people.  Exploration found footprint in the back yard but no indication that anyone had left the property.  Inside, all was eerily quiet until the skittering started.  A few drops of blood were found in the kitchen and then a devil rat made an appearance . . . and was brutally slaughtered.  We checked upstairs, but it was empty.  That only left the basement, listed as unfinished, to go into.  Joy.

So many devil rats in the basement pistols, machine pistols and a shotgun make them into a squishy mess pretty quickly with only minimal property damage.  But still no sign of Eric . . . but there is door that does not show up on the official plans.  Behind it are people or dogs or dog-people! Or, as it is, Gabriel Hounds.  This combat is rather more vicious than the one against the rats but the hounds fall, while we are merely bloodied.  Once we put down the hounds we can explore the revealed bomb shelter behind the door, behind another locked door is a wounded Eric, who we whisk away for medical treatment.  Silver Fox is happy, we get paid and the bodies of the Gabriel Hounds are flogged to CalTech’s parazoology department.

Notes: This was our Halloweenish adventure for the NorCal group.
