Tuesday Magic Item – Monster Mask
31 October, 2017“I do not like festivals with masks,” grumbled Voddick.
“They are just having fun, trying on a different face,” said Gollaon taking another swig from his bottle.
“I expect people to wear the same face. There is a reason why two faced is an insult.”
“Well, surely for just one night it is alright.”
“Maybe.”
Monster Mask
These masks can be simple, just painted wood or decorated cloth, but the more powerful they are, the more elaborate they are. Some are decorated with foil of precious metals and some, the most magical, are set with semi-precious gems.
The Monster Masks all have the same basic ability, to cloak the wearer in another form, but the more powerful the mask, the greater the form taken can be and the more real it is.
Each mask can only be used once, it flakes away to nothingness when the last of the magic is used. Their abilities are:
- Basic Mask, acts as a disguise self for 60 +5d6 minutes.
- Copper Decorated Mask, acts once as a disguise self for 30 +5d6 minutes and once as an alter self for 3 + 2d6 minutes.
- Silver Worked Mask, as the Copper Mask, plus when using alter self, they can gain the abilities, physical attributes and natural attacks of a creature up to CR 1. When in creature guises, the seeming has 10% of that creature’s hit points and if it take that much damage, the form and the mask shred away into tatters and then nothingness (the wearer taking any additional damage).
- Gilded Mask, as the Silver Mask except the wear can assume a form up to CR 2.
- Bejeweled Mask, as the Silver Mask except the wear can assume a form up to CR 3 and gains 1d10+5 temporary hit points that vanish immediately after the mask does.

Notes: Ending the month on both a All Hallows and monster themed item. Though I am sure cleaver players (and DMs) can come up with many uses for items like this. Also, this is the first time the Pathfinder and D&D 5E versions have mapped to each other perfectly.
