Tuesday Magic Item – Breaker Orb

Boom!Gollaon ducked as the projectile passed over his head and shattered against the building with a terrifying roar, tearing apart part of the wall.  He grabbed a javelin and tossed it at the creature that emerged from the blast.

A swift strike from Voddick brought the creature down before it could attack his friend.  “Where did that come from?” ask Voddick as the creatures corpse started to melt away into blue-black smoke.

“More magic, breaker orbs, they shatter releasing magical energy and a creature,” said Gollaon.

“Delightful,” said Voddick.  “And nothing we can do about it except destroy those catapults.”

“A task for the cover of night.”

“Duck!”

Breaker Orb

These heavy and crudely cast glass orbs are filled with a swirling liquid that occasionally almost formed into the shape of a creature or part of one.  One propelled with force, the orb breaks easily, releasing a terrible burst of noise and energy and some sort of creature from another realm.

The orb shatters on impact after being propelled with force, inflicting 3d6 sonic damage in a 10′ radius (Reflex save, DC 17, for half), rigid structures only use half hardness to resist this damage, and all within 30′ must make a Will Save (DC 15) or suffer a -1 morale penalty to attacks and saves against fear for 2d4 rounds.

After the explosion resolves, a monster is summoned, as per Summon Monster II, and under a Rage effect (+2 morale bonus to Strength and Constitution, a +1 morale bonus on Will saves, and a -2 penalty to AC) for five rounds.  The monster in uncontrolled and will attack the nearest creature.

Greater Breaker Orbs inflict 4d6 sonic damage (DC 18) and summon a monster via Monster Summon III list for eight rounds (also under a Rage effect).

The orb shatters on impact after being propelled with force, inflicting 3d6 thunder damage in a 10′ radius (Dexterity save, DC 14, for half).

After the explosion resolves, a monster is summoned, choose a CR 1 creature that is enraged (+2 melee damage and advantage on melee weapon attack rolls using Strength but attack rolls against it have advantage), the monster exists for five rounds and then vanished.  The monster in uncontrolled and will attack the nearest creature.

Greater Breaker Orbs inflict 4d6 sonic damage (DC 15) and summons a CR 2 monster that is also enraged and exists for eight rounds.

Notes: Name of item shortened from “Line Breaker Orb” as I imagine these would be very effective in breaking formations of soldiers as well as walls.  Again playing to the monster theme for this month.  I know it is territory I have deal with before and one I will probably return to.

Update: It just occurred to me that these are exactly to sort of weapons the Dark Star Dominion would use.
