Tuesday Magic Item – Twilight Summoning Broach

3 October, 2017

Seen / Not Seen“That new summoner is exceedingly proficient but I do not like the creatures summoned they seem . . . off,” Voddick concluded he voice trailing off.

“Agreed,” said Gollaon.  “But oddly fascinating much like the summoner.”

“Well, as long as they are kept in line, I have no complaints.”

“Unlike that infernalist we served with in Olosk,” said Voddick.

“Well, I am sure he is regretting his choices now.  That group of imps that turned on him,”  Gollaon shuddered.

“Messy,” agreed Voddick.

Twilight Summoning Broach

These items are made of a gemstone with beautifully carved intaligo work carved into it usually set in silver, but the image on them changes occasionally though nothing else does (cracks, fittings, even dirt and dust) usually they show images of people but animals are almost as common with the occasional item or symbol.

The broach allows the wearer to summon creatures from the twilight realms, realities just slightly different, slightly stranger than the one the summoner is in, when casting summon monster instead of the usual celestial or fiendish creature.  (See the Twilight Creature Template.)  As long as the wearer has a summoned twilight creature, they gain a +2 deflection bonus to armor class.

The wearer can also use the broach to project image, once a week, if the image is disbelieved, it becomes monochrome for the person who successfully disbelieved.

Aura strong conjuration [shadow]; CL 13th
Slot neck; Price 35,000; Weight
Construction Requirements
Craft Wondrous Items, planar binding, project image; Cost 17,500

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The broach allows the wearer to summon creatures from the twilight realms, realities just slightly different, slightly stranger than the one the summoner is in, this function as a Conjure Woodlands Beings except they are twilight creatures rather than fae.  (See the Twilight Creature Template.)  This ability may not be used again until the wearer has completed a long rest.  As long as the wearer has a conjured twilight creature, they gain a +2 deflection bonus to armor class.

The wearer can also use the broach to project image, once a week, through which the wearer can cast non-damaging 0-level spell.  If the image is disbelieved, it becomes monochrome for the person who successfully disbelieved.

Setting Notes, the Sea of Stars: While the Empress does not outright ban conjuring being from other places, she keeps a close eye on such magic.  If found with such an item by Imperial agents, it will mark the bearer as someone to watch.

Notes: This item is both to play to this month’s monster theme and is a tribute to the Twilight Zone (which premiered on yesterday’s date in 1959) and its creator Rod Serling.

Broach is a variant spelling of brooch but also works as a double meaning for the item.

  1. “See the Twilight Creature Template.”

Is this something that is standard in D&D / Pathfinder universe, or is it something you’ll be posting?

    • Posted now. I just ran out of time last night to get both magic item and template completed.
