New Magic Item – Elemental Candle

13 September, 2017

Let it light the wayVoddick watched the casting of the candles with intense focus.

Gollaon leaned in.  “It is interesting but not that interesting.”

“You are wrong, my friend, this is a brilliant use of elementalism.”

“Well, that is true,” nodded Gollaon slowly.  “I have not seen it applied in this fashion before.”

Elemental Candle

These candles are made of purest materials imbued with raw elemental essence giving them unique properties.  Making them is tricky and requires considerable skill either as a alchemist or chandler as well as the ability to manipulate the elements.

There are four primary type of candle, one for each of the primary elements, and they share certain characteristics:

  • They burn brightly, giving off light equal to a torch but without smoke.
  • They burn long, only one inch of the candle is consumed for each day it burns.
  • They can enhance the magic of the element they are made of.  An elemental of the appropriate type summoned while the candle is burning are harder to dispel, the caster treated as two levels higher to resist dispelling and banishing magic, and (optionally) at the cost of a number of inches of the candle equal to the spell level gain the advantage of the Augment Summoning and Extend Spell feats.

Each of them has a unique appears and special abilities based on their element:

  • Air, is a pale almost translucent white and burns with a sky blue flame.  Under an open sky, it casts twice as much light and it is only extinguished by water.  Its flames deal 1d4 points of electrical damage to fire creatures.  The bearer of the lit candle gains a +4 competence bonus to Fly checks and to Acrobatic checks to for jumps and falls.
  • Earth, looks like sandstone and burns with a yellow flame.  Confined and under the earth, it casts twice as much light and it is only extinguished by an greater amount of fire.  Its flames deal 1d4 points of acid damage to water creatures.  The bearer of the lit candle gains a +4 competence bonus to CMD and any saves to avoid be pushed, shoved or tripped.
  • Fire, glows with an interior light and burns with an angry red flame.  The bearer and all allies within 20′ of them can see through flame and smoke as though it was a light fog and it is only extinguished by a mighty blast of air.  Its flames deal 1d4 points of fire damage to earth creatures.  The bearer of a lit candle gains a +4 competence bonus to Heal checks.
  • Water, is a shifting blend of blue and green and burns with a sea-foam white flame.  Underwater, it casts twice as much light and it can only be extinguished by earth.  Its flame deal 1d4 points of cold damage to air creatures.  The bearer of the lit candle gains a +4 competence bonus to their Swim checks and may swim as quickly as they move on land.

An elemental candle usually begins with a twelve inch length but can be made in other sizes.

  1. “giving off light equal to a touch but without smoke” – should that be torch instead of touch?
