New Magic Item – Cookbook of Counterspells

6 September, 2017

Baked Goods“I have never worked for a wizard who was also a baker before,” said Voddick.

“I cannot say that I have either, but it is an interesting time,” replied Gollaon weighing a small loaf of bread in his hand.

“Are you going to eat that?”

“Oh, no, I am good.”  Gollaon handed over the loaf.  “Enjoy.”

“I will.  Though I fear this job will lead to me getting fat.”

“Never.”

Cookbook of Counterspells

These books are of moderate size and often filled with notes and marginalia from various owners.  They usually have a strap or ties to keep it closed.  The scents of spices, herbs and cooking blend with the paper of the book.

As this book will tell you, magic and cooking have much in common and with the proper recipe, magic can be diffused into prepared mixtures or baked goods.  The basic mixtures are divided by the schools of magic and are of increasing complexity, the finished products are by by specific spell and require increasingly exotic ingredients.

The basic recipes cost 10 x [spell level squared] and give a +1 competence bonus to the counterspell the appropriate type of spell and are only consumed on a successful counterspell.  While the finished products cost 50 x [spell level squared] give a +4 competence bonus to counterspell the proper spell and is only consumed on a successful counterspell.  Discovering the recipe for a finished product takes experimentation and successful Craft (baker) or profession (chief) check against a DC of 15 + the spell level of the spell it is designed to counter, often a book will include such recipes from earlier owners.

The book also provides a +4 competence bonus to any check to prepare exotic baked goods.

Aura moderate abjuration; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 3,000; Weight 1 lb
Construction Requirements
Create Wondrous Items, dispel magic, guidance, owl’s wisdom; Cost 1,500

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The basic recipes cost 10 x [spell level squared] and give a +1 bonus to a counterspell used against the appropriate type of spell and are only consumed on a successful counterspell.  While the finished products cost 50 x [spell level squared] give the caster advantage on their counterspell attempt against the proper spell and is only consumed on a successful counterspell.  Discovering the recipe for a finished product takes experimentation and successful Intelligence roll, adding proficiency if the character is proficient in cooking, against a DC of 12 + the spell level of the spell it is designed to counter, often a book will include such recipes from earlier owners.

The book also provides advantage to any roll to prepare exotic baked goods.

Notes: Yes, this is late, should have been done yesterday but life and travel got in the way.  My apologies,

Update: I was talking to my wife about this item and we decided on Fireball Muffins and Cone of Cold Key Lime Pie as two of the recipes.
