Tuesday Magic Item – Cloaked in Crowds

15 August, 2017

Shy or stealthy?

“Are you sure they went this way?” asked Voddick, trying to spot the person among the flowing marketplace crowds.

“Yes, but between the mass of people and the skill of the one we are, were following, I fear they are lost to us,” answered Gollaon.

“I suggest we search the taverns.”

“Capital idea.”

Cloaked in Crowds

This poetically named item is in fact a rather unassuming cloak, though made of the finest cloths, in muted colors and its platinum claps appears at pewter to those who do not inspect it closely.  Around other worn clothing, it gradually shifts to match them in cut and appearance, blending into local styles seamlessly.

The wearer has a sixth sense in crowds and moves through them at normal rate.  In a crowd, if the wearer wishes, they just melt into the surrounding mass of people becoming just another anonymous member, gaining a +5 bonus to any skill check that could benefit from such a talent.

If attacked in a crowd, the wearer gains a +1 dodge bonus to armor class if there are at least four other people (beyond the attacker) adjacent to the cloak’s wearer and if the attacker rolls a natural one during such an attack, they must make a Reflex save (DC 15) or lose their weapon or hit one of the other adjacent people (cloak wearer’s choice).

Aura moderate illusion; CL 7th

Create Wondrous Item, clairvoyance, confusion, disguise self; Cost 3,750

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The wearer has a sixth sense in crowds and moves through them at normal rate.  In a crowd, if the wearer wishes, they just melt into the surrounding mass of people becoming just another anonymous member, gaining advantage on any ability check that could benefit from such a talent.

If attacked in a crowd, the wearer gains a +1 bonus to armor class if there are at least four other people (beyond the attacker) adjacent to the cloak’s wearer and if the attacker rolls a natural one during such an attack, they must make a Reflex save (DC 13) or lose their weapon or hit one of the other adjacent people (cloak wearer’s choice).

Notes: As usual, in the lead up to GenCon, I write up a magic item that would be useful to have a GenCon.  And being able to breeze through crowds would be fabulous, not being spotted by my friends, not so useful so I made that effect optional.
