Tuesday Magic Item – Watchful Circlet of the Cat Monarch

8 August, 2017

Circle of Cats“I know the symbol of the kingdom is a leopard, but do there need to be cats everywhere in the palace?” asked Voddick, shooing a kitten away.

“Keeping in a good relationship with the symbolic animal of your house as not the worst plan,” answered Gollaon.  “You never know who is watching, after all.”

“I do, dozen of little bright eyed cats,” muttered Voddick.

Watchful Circlet of the Cat Monarch

These circlets are usually understated copper or silver inlaid with gold and a few gems or enameled designs showing a crest displaying a cat of some sort.  The circlet is very comfortable to wear and never accidentally falls loose.

The wearer gains low light vision and a +4 competence bonus on Perception checks and cannot be surprised by any material being (ghosts and magic can still cause surprise).

Cats find the wearer very amiable, the wearer gains a +4 competence bonus on Animal Handling checks when working with cats and any cats fighting alongside the wearer gain a +1 morale bonus to attack rolls and saves against fear.

However, if the wearer ever attacks a cat who has not attacked them first, the circlet ceases to be magical for them for all time.

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th

Craft Wondrous Item, cat’s grace, clairvoyance, eagle’s splendor; Cost 5,750

First paragraph as above.

The wearer gains dark vision and advantage on Wisdom (Perception) rolls and cannot be surprised by any material being (ghosts and magic can still cause surprise).

Cats find the wearer very amiable, the wearer gains advantage on Wisdom (Animal Handling) rolls when working with cats and any cats fighting alongside the wearer gain advantage on the first attack and first saving throw they against fear each combat.

However, if the wearer ever attacks a cat who has not attacked them first, the circlet ceases to be magical for them for all time.

Notes: Yes, I know, the cats in the picture and not at all watchful but it was just so cute.  Today’s magic item is in support of International Cat Day.

  1. “…And in the end the burgesses passed that remarkable law which is told of by traders in Hatheg and discussed by travellers in Nir; namely, that in Ulthar no man may kill a cat.”
